Games are just a medium, an inert blank canvas. They can be used however the developers want. You can choose to disagree with their point of view, you can choose to ignore it, but you can't deny it.
I'd suggest COD, Medal of honor, Battlefield, etc, make far bigger political statements than the inclusion of a couple of gay characters in TLOU.

Not sure of your point. If you're saying devs shouldn't look to using diverse characters because they wouldn't see the sales, then a game about the symbiotic relationship of a young boy and a cat-bird-dog should never have made it off the drawing board.

Just because there was no way to install patches didn't mean games weren't released unfinished or with gamebreaking bugs in them. At least nowadays we may get to see, for example, the extra dungeons that Wind waker was going to have but were cut due to time constraints.
The update above seems to provide more than enough context, but it seems like the author of this story is so dedicated in peddling trite garbage they couldn't be bothered to do the legwork. Instead of finding out the truth of the situation and writing about that, they double down on the outrage for the sake of clicks.
