I actually think the MGS story is pretty interesting. Check out the timeline, the story is woven through some rear world events, and that alone in my opinion adds some depth.
Besides, stupid stories have never stopped Hollywood. From videogames alone we've had Super Mario Bros, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Annihilation, several Pokemon, Doom, etc. Bad movies from videogames are as common as bad videogames from movies.

It looks pretty sweet to me, and the thought of going to a relatively unexplored theatre of WWII is pretty appealing. Maybe that's what high school history lessons should evolve to: Historically accurate interactive games.
