I agree with slave2Dcontroller.
If Kid Icarus is what Nintendo "does," then where is the game? We haven't seen one in ages.
Hopefully this is what Retro is working on (sorry, StarFox fans...but I think Retro could so something AMAZING with KI).
Abriael -- You listed one additional franchise. That's it. And a new franchise doesn't necessarily mean it's a new type of game.
Infamous is a sandbox game; all sandbox games now owe their existence to GTA3, which in turn, owed its existence to Ocarina of Time.
A new FPS is still an FPS; they all have their DNA from Wolfenstein and Doom.
A new racing game is still a racing game; mostly gaming DNA from the early 90's -- NFS, Ridge Racer, Virtua Racing, ...
orakga -- The 2D platformer is certainly an old genre, but so what? A good game is a good game.
Wolfenstein 3D came out in 1992, and Doom came out in 1993. It's a 17-year old genre that has been constantly recycled, especially for this console gen and the last.
I can't say I'm "ashamed" that so many of these games exist and that so many are so derivative of previous titles. People like them. If that floats their boat, more power to 'em.

Abriael -- Compare the number of core first party titles Nintendo has released (I typed out 13; Spoony then reminded me of Fire Emblem, which puts the list at 14) to how many Sony and Microsoft have released.
And new "core franchises"? Halo, Gran Turismo, God of War, Project Gotham, Killzone, Ratchet and Clank, Forza, etc. aren't new, as all of the titles currently released are SEQUELS.
Same for third party games like Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Reside...
I think you're right. There seems to be a good chunk of people on here who started playing games last gen, so their idea of "core" is shaped by the preponderance of FPS and sandbox games from a few years ago.
That's a point of view I understand, but I certainly don't agree with it.
Madis007 -- Hopefully you're just being ironic, as that's a pretty lame attempt at trolling.
Velcry -- I suppose it depends on the game and the gamer. I spent 70 hours on Twilight Princess, and that was over a few months. OTOH, I barely played Brawl.
Can Big N do more? A first party releasing core franchises every two and a half months is a pretty brisk pace. Are Sony and Microsoft matching that?
evrfighter -- Actually, Mario Galaxy is only the secon...
Lets see...Ninteno has made...
-- Zelda: Twilight Princess
-- Super Mario Galaxy
-- Metroid Prime 3 (and now the Prime Trilogy)
-- Super Smash Bros. Brawl
-- PunchOut
-- Paper Mario
-- Two Wario games, including one very nice 2D platformer
-- Mario Kart
-- Two Excite racers
-- Battalion Wars 2
...and people say they haven't made core games?
They'll also have Galaxy 2, Other M, the next Zelda, NSMB and...
...someone else who hasn't played Super Mario Galaxy.
But onto the author of the article...
Galaxy got good reviews for a reason -- it's the most innovative platformer since Mario 64. If that doesn't hold the author's attention, he just "grew out" of platformers.
But you're right about Mario not putting Wii on top. Mario sells, but he isn't the driving force for the Wii. NSMB will sell, but I doubt it's a killer app.
If you think there hasn't been a good Mario since the third installment, you haven't played Galaxy.
But anyone who has looked at SMG's sales and release date will realize that the Wii's success isn't on Mario's back.
Product -- Well, didn't Iwata recently say they weren't cutting the price of Wii, too? I'm skeptical of what any person says about marketing in this industry.
Nintendo wants to bring in new gamers. That's no secret.
But they also know the value of keeping "traditional" gamers. Zelda, Metroid and proper Mario titles aren't for quasi-interested gamers. They're for people who want to invest 20 hours (at least) in a big-time, AAA title.

Nugan -- Honestly, I cancelled my GI subscription after seeing their review for No More Heroes. They actually complained about the subject matter and violence. Put that game on another console, and they would've reviewed it much differently.
Why should Nintendo be interested in copying? It's Microsoft and Sony that have seen Big N's success this gen and tried to copy it, not the other way around.
Trying to be just like Sony and Microsoft is what made the Gamecube come in a distant third last gen. I don't think Nintendo has any desire to do that again.

NintendoPad needs to get their collective heads out of their communal rear end.
One, who cares about how well Nintendo will do with this price cut? It's good for consumers. Big N has turned a profit this entire gen. I love their console, but I'm laboring under no delusions about them laughing all the way to the bank in Kyoto. Plus, $199 is an easier impulse buy for casual gamers.
Two, I remember the Wii's launch. I remember the lines. And casuals w...
I wouldn't mind seeing them change up the gameplay. Yes, I know PunchOut has been a twitch/timing game. But we've already got one of those now on Wii.
Since EA doesn't seem in any hurry to make a decent Fight Night for Wii, why not beat them to the punch and make a good boxing sim? And I don't mean like the unresponsive game that was in Wii Sports. Use the nunchuck's analog stick to control the punches, just like in Fight Night. But then you can use the Wii remote for all ot...
Sadly, some people think that unless a game sells Halo-type numbers, it isn't a hit.
Wii titles cost less to develop. It's why a game like No More Heroes can sell about 400,000 copies, turn a profit, and get greenlit for a sequel. If I'm not mistaken, PunchOut has sold about the same.
Actually, I don't see anyone calling out Nintendo specifically. GMY pointed out Activision.
But yeah...dumb name. I'm not sure if they're trying to make it sound like a new game, or if they think more casual gamers are actually going to buy a FPS.
World at War sold just fine on Wii without any renaming.
"I'd rather sit and use my controller to play COD with friends after a long day than wave my arms around..."
Go play Metroid Prime 3, then you'll have an idea of how a good FPS works on Wii.
If you're waving your arms around, you're doing it wrong.
Intrigued for Scribblenauts...but the Extraction score is what I feared...an average rail shooter, and nothing more.
Anywho...I just don't understand some reviewers. They gave Metroid Prime Trilogy a 9?
Corruption's score alone was 9.5.

The whole industry (and economy) are recovering from a pretty bad recession. It's hard to fault any of the big three for trying to jump start their sales.
Plus, consider that if a $50 cut gives maybe 50,000 more sales month to month...
150,000 consoles at $250 = $37,500,000
200,000 consoles at $200 = $40,000,000
Nintendo would make a greater profit in that scenario.
The Wii will never see a PS3-like spike in sales. But if they can pr...
GamingSucksNow -- Dude, what are you talking about? My post didn't even address software. We're talking about console hardware here, and it's not in question that Natal and the Sony Wand are being made now because of Nintendo's ridiculous success this gen.
