Yup. There's a reason first-party Nintendo titles sell well, and it isn't all name recognition (although that certainly helps). A good chunk of it is quality. If you buy Mario, Metroid or Zelda, you know you're getting a well put together game that should provide a bare minimum of 20 hours playing (I spent 70 on LoZ:TP).

EA put some good effort into TW10 on Wii (I don't think it's a stretch to say it's the best version released), and it sold well as a result. Imagine that -- ...

EA truly screwed the pooch with this year's Madden. They took a chance, but Madden has a reputation as a sim, not an arcade-ish football game. They did GREAT last year with the call your shot option. Drawing up your own plays and slicing up the D was awesome. They just went too far from what makes Madden...well, Madden.

IMO, of course.

Extraction...I dunno. The original was not THAT big a hit. But we'll see. Extraction versus Shattered Memories this fall could...

Nintendo built its strategy this gen around motion controls. Does anyone honestly think Microsoft and Sony will?

The casual market will play a factor, but I doubt Microsoft or Sony think they'll be stealing Nintendo's mojo. Big N caught lightning in a bottle. That type of success isn't something that is easily replicated, and MS/Sony know it. They'll incorporate motion controls to try to get a piece of the action, but nothing more. IMO.

Personally, I prefer the ...

Jecht -- Yes, the PS2 vs. GC comparison was used because you said Nintendo somehow stopped trying to compete long before that (N64 era). That is simply not true, as the GC was more powerful than the PS2.

No, a small boost of power isn't innovation. A new way of controlling games is. That's the whole point of Wii. Nintendo decided to stop competing in the graphics wars. And IMO, more polys onscreen at a higher res doesn't equal innovation, either. You see it in games like Ha...

Jecht -- Generating sales is the point of the industry. You can't blame Nintendo for making stuff that sells.

The GC was a shade more powerful than the PS2, so again, I'm not sure how Nintendo wasn't trying to "keep up." They realized this gen, though, that they can't make another console too similar to the others; it failed them last gen.

Games? LoZ: TP, NHM, SMG, Prime Trilogy, MadWorld, TW10, Muramasa, SSBB, Little King's Story, World of Goo, Conduit,...

Wii Sports Resort was a demo. Motion Plus has a lot of potential in it, and I think the next Zelda is the place we'll see it fully realized.

Divine-Sniper -- Have you played Metroid Prime 3, Tiger Woods 10, Wii Sports Resort and Conduit?
Two of those are FPS, and the controls are DEAD ON.
TW10 is the best golf sim yet released.
Resort nails motion controls for sword fighting.
Sorry, but there have been some VERY good games that have utilized motion controls. I can't go back to dual analog for FPS after Corruption.

KeiZka -- People just have short memories. There was a LOT of crappy shovelware...

I'm really, really, REALLY hoping that Ubi doesn't screw this up, because it's looking AAA-level so far.

Indeed.

...unless they release Zelda, too, which (sadly) has always overshadowed Metroid.

You do know that progressive scan is enhanced def, not standard def...right?

Wii games certainly can't equal the high def consoles, but they can look good enough to still be visually impressive in their own right (see: Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3).

That said, ...

500% more dialog in a 100% rail shooter.

Still not interested.

Other M and the next Zelda should be amazing. I can't wait to see what Team Ninja does with Metroid.

On the translation...babel fish doesn't really help that much here, either. But from trying to c/p the last two paragraphs, there isn't much info to be had, it seems. We'll get specific details on this game when Nintendo wants us to have 'em.

This is looking AAA-level.

Don't screw it up again, Ubi.

NMH2 is looking to be PACKED full of win.

I'm not really sure what the point is of including classic controller support, though. The sparse motion controls are what made the first one so good (no overused waggle). Diff'rent strokes, I guess.

Still no real info about the open world, though. Yes, we know it's going to be smaller, overall. That's fine. I just want it to be better (better collision detection, bike handling, etc.).

The problem is that people seem to think "hardcore" is synonymous with "M-rated."

I mentioned Mario Galaxy in other threads on here as a core title, and the typical "kiddie plumbers aren't hardcore!"-type of comments followed (nevermind how the difficulty ramps up to get all 120 stars, or how high the production values and overall quality of the game are).

It's something I just don't understand. Maybe it's from people who started gaming...

People are just impatient for core N franchises. Metroid: Other M and Galaxy 2 will be out next year, and we'll probably see whatever Retro is working on, and maybe a flight game from Factor 5.

Then there's the next Zelda to look forward to, as well.

When you look at all of the great core Nintendo games that are slated to come out for Wii (possibly Star Fox and Kid Icarus, too)...this holiday season is skimpy for first-party titles.

But NSMB definitely ...

Extraction and RE:DC probably won't be my cup of tea; I'm just not that into rail shooters.

Shattered Memories, FFCC:CB and NSMB all look solid, though.

The COD4 port, Smash Up and Trauma Teem are rentals.

If only RS2 didn't get bumped 'til next year...but that, NHM2, Other M, Galaxy 2, and maybe the release of Retro's project should rock.

"Speculation has intensified of an impending Wii price cut..."

Speculation?

There's a sales flier listing it at $199. It's about as badly kept a secret as the PS3 Slim.

And making it three years with no price cut of any kind is about as much as a console maker can expect, anyway.

6048d ago 0 agree0 disagreeView comment

Sales-wise, NSMB will compete. It won't launch as big as MW2 or Halo, but over time, it will accumulate decent numbers.

Content-wise, no, Big N isn't competing against those titles, and I'm not saying it's a matter of "core" versus "casual." There are honestly hardcore gamers who just don't play that much FPS.

Plus, the FPS genre is crowded to begin with, and N's lone FPS franchise (Metroid Prime) has already seen a (re)release this year.

edgeofblade -- If you can't turn with IR/pointer controls, that's on you, not the game. The remote/nunchuck is as close as a console has gotten to mouse/keyboard control. Dual analog has always been clunkier than the PC equivalent.

Product -- I only half agree with you. If you are looking for creativity in new IP's, then yes, it isn't the best time. Okami got two shots on the two best-selling consoles of their respective gens, but it was still anemic on the market. But there...
