I'm under no illusions that Sony might yet screw it up - they've done it a LOT in the past - but I remain hopeful. The Xbox One will no doubt have some really good games on it - anyone thinking otherwise is mad - but I will not buy into a console that has so many features that I simply will never use. Or in the case of Kinect, actively loathe. Kinect is useless for games, a more sophisticated version will still be useless for controlling games and still not be as precise as a Wiimo...

I know "you be trollin'" as the kids say, but I'll answer you anyway. It still plays movies, will still have Netflix and whatever other video on demand service you need (which many people use rather than watch live TV), will do Skype calls and whatever else (it does have a camera attachment after all).
No, it does more than just play games, it's simply that the games are (so far) the primary focus of the machine.

No, because they're using assets that are not theirs. The commentary is owned by them, but all the art and sound assets of the game belong to whoever made it.
As for your other example, no, they couldn't claim ad revenue on brief snippets of game footage...only on footage of significant length, like LP's which show the entirety of the game.

@Roccetarius...if your only motivation for making LP's is making money, then how big a fan can you really claim to be?

EDIT - If you're reliant on videogame commentary to survive, I'd suggest you have bigger things to worry about. Nintendo aren't responsible for other people's poor life choices.

Nobody is stopping people from freely sharing their gaming experience...just so long as people don't monetize the videos.
LP's show the entire game from beginning to end...Sony's share button is not the same thing as doing that.
There are countless LP'ers that make the videos for fun....they will NOT be affected in any way by this. The only ones being affected are the greedy ones who thought they could make a quick buck off the concept of LP's.

It's telling that they use MST3K as an example considering how Rifftrax operates now. They've monetized their content by offering up the commentary on its own for a small fee, which then must be synced up to the appropriate video file.

Notice how they don't actually use the movie footage to make their money? Well that's what these LP'ers who monetize their videos are complaining about....they want to be able to use assets that are not owned by them in or...

Exactly...you can do LP's all you like but if you're monetizing them, Nintendo have put a stop to that unless you have some sort of deal in place.

It's odd. All the ones complaining about this are the ones who are making money using the assets of others without permission. People are saying that LP's are not about the game, but the commentary, and I find that massively absurd. Without the game - and all the assets and mechanics which belong to other people ...

They're not deleting them, just stopping people monetizing the videos that use their content. Talking nonsense over game footage is not the same as creating anything...LP'ers aren't content creators, and they shouldn't be entitled to make money based on other people's assets.

What losses? If they sell a game with the system, they head into profit. I doubt anyone will buy the system without a game, so I don't think they've lost a thing on Wii U.

And what's wrong with more people being able to make small-scale games? That's where the next generation of talent comes from, it's getting back to the old days of bedroom programmers being able to create their own games and find an audience for them.
Yes, you will occasionally get crap, but the same is true at all levels of development and is not exclusive to the indy sector.
Also, didn't Mr Blow(hard) make a 2-D side-scroller? It had the pretension factor g...

Right now, zombies are getting it the most. Where's the love for the undead?
PETZ, People for the Ethical Treatment of Zombies. Let's hear the outrage for all the zombies getting finished off around the gaming world...I'll organise a protest, dig up a corpse and join me in the Dead Pride Parade!!!

You're a preachy idiot. I would never inflict cruelty on an animal, but I'd have no problem in killing one to eat.
As much as you whine and complain about the process, its far more humane nowadays than it used to be. Used to be they'd just bash an animal's skull in or slit it's throat while it's conscious and let it bleed out. Now the animals are stunned, and then killed.
And no, it is not hypocritical to love animals but also eat meat...I suggest yo...

Because a lot of people are babies who cannot handle seeing such topics discussed....the wrong thing said, and soon you have a scandal.
Also, let's face it, videogame writing would - in the most part - have to improve a heck of a lot to reach even Michael Bay level of sophistication, so asking them to tackle religion or any other weighty message may be a bit beyond most game writers.

Not quite the same, you're talking about a storage medium and the info it's capable of holding, when you should really be comparing the special effects of today to movies in the 80's.
Unfortunately, many movies today have sparkly CGI effects that simply don't hold up the same as practical effects from the 80's. The proliferation of CGI (better graphics) hasn't necessarily resulted in better movies (compare John Carpenter's The Thing to the 2011 prequel mov...

Graphics are a really nice bonus, but they don't make a crappy game good. For all the technical grunt on show in something like Crysis, the gameplay is as stock as any other FPS out there, and the art design is bland as hell.
I'd rather a game was fun than be technically brilliant, but a chore to play. It's great when you can have both, but too many companies focus on meaningless technical showing off rather than new or interesting design or gameplay ideas. That's w...

A phone, and the games on it, would also work if the wi-fi or 3G crapped out. Hell, you could also play games and music if the cell service also died.
People are concerned with games requiring to be always online in order to work, not just because of their own internet connection, but the fact that publisher servers often get overloaded or crap out leaving people unable to play the game they paid $60 for.
That's the issue, nothing else. Always online would be a nice capa...

Fun to play always, ALWAYS trumps graphical quality. Having both is awesome, but a visually appealing game with crappy gameplay will not do well.
I'd also argue that good art design is also preferable to sheer graphical fidelity or muscle - sterile environments and character design, nicely rendered, is still sterile and dull. Too many devs get hung up on realism and technical grunt, and many games just simply don't have that touch of personality or magic that games like Raym...

MS just need to confirm that Always Online is a capability, but not a necessity for games to work....that will save them a lot of head aches and negative press.
Console gamers just don't want to have to put up with issues like Sim City and Diablo 3 players had to endure...tell them they won't have to, and it'll be fine. Unless, of course, that isn't the case and that's WHY they're being silent....

Interesting....but the graphical style they went with is a little iffy. I'd have preferred some gorgeous, HD 2D artwork with amazing animation. That'd be far more in keeping with the style of the original game.
