While this review definitely dissonates with pretty much everyone else's take on this game, I found that the reviewer actually defended his points pretty well. Yes, I find it odd that someone gave the game such a harsh score when everyone else seems to be loving it, but if he explains properly in the review why he didn't like the game, then it's fair.
And he did just that, saying that the visuals are pretty, but the gameplay suffers because the devs went overboard...

Pretty unlikely. That's quite a high mark to try and reach. But it still probably wll turn a pretty good profit for Nintendo.

Good start, for a launch week. But Nintendo needs to get as many Wii U's as possible to retailers right before the holiday shopping frenzy starts. Shit's gonna explode then. :P
Fair enough, but you gotta admit that the 5th player feature isn't really too much of a selling point for Mario Bros. U. HD graphics, on the other hand, is a HUGE plus.
That, and off-screen gameplay, are two great things with Mario Bros. U that obviously weren't possible with the Wii.
I own the game. I love it, and I think it's absolutely the best in the NSMB series. The level design is amazing, the difficulty is just right, the extra challenge modes are a lot of fun.
That being said... I don't think this game would be only possible on Wii U hardware at all. This game could've been made for the Wii, although with two very obvious compromises: no HD graphics, and no 5th player with gamepad. Everything else was perfectly doable on the Wii consol...

1. The update isn't THAT large. It's only a bit more than 1 GB in size, not the 5 GB that almost everyone erroneously reported. Although I'll happily aknowledge the fact that it definitely would've been better if it had all those features ready at launch, instead of being put in a day-one update. 1. Because the Xbox 360 was the lead platform, so it has the edge.
2. Because the difference in raw power between Wii U and the other consoles isn't really THAT big (like it was from PS2 to PS3, or SNES to N64), and
3. Because it's a year-0 game on the Wii U, whereas it's a year-6 game on PS3 and a year-7 game on Xbox 360. Compare how Black Ops looks on Wii U to any game in the launch of Xbox 360 and PS3, and you will see a BIG difference.

I think the same as you. Metroid: Other M had its flaws, sure, but the way people talk about it, you'd think it's Duke Nukem Forever or something. A pretty underrated game, in my opinion.

Wow, what stupidity. Almost all of this is a diatribe about the ending and DLC, and then constant comparisons to the other versions. The very little it says about the actual game is that the graphics aren't the best, but the controls are great. That's it.

That doesn't stop his comment from being true, in a sarcastic way. Anyone with a basic survival instinct would know better than to forget to eat, sleep, crap, etc, just because of a videogame.
Yeah, not including Trine 2 is a HUGE oversight, because it's one of the best games available at launch (and better than 90% of the games on that list).
However, it seems they only counted the retail games, not the eShop ones, which is a mistake, IMO.

My Wii U froze on me three times, and all three times was while I was cheking out community messages in Miiverse. I couldn't even shut off the console with the power button, so I had to unplug it all three times. Weird. I hope this get fixed soon.

It's having some issues now, but nothing really serious. All of these issues are being blown waaaaaaay out of proportion.
For the most part, it's a pretty solid console with a pretty solid launch lineup, and most of the issues it's having will be patched sooner or later.
