Neko, the Cell was forward thinking. But it didn't work out. Blu-ray was stupid(cost, losses, little difference from much cheaper HD DVD). All of that space isn't used on most games. More than 95% of games released don't use it.
So Sony somehow made 40 gigs cost them 5 billion dollars. Apparently they didn't see that coming.
Well I guess MS will be sued for ME3.
frelyler, Blu-ray ushered in an era of overpriced equipment, high media prices and was only cheaper because Sony had no choice but to eat a $240 loss on each unit sold since it was mainly being sold to gamers. So it's not that incredible. Anyone willing to take the losses can pull that off.
But the reason the attach rate was so low on the PS3 in the beginning was because so many of those early units were sold to videophiles and not gamers. That contributed to the heavy lo...
Rynx, I was referring to frelyler's belief that not having Alan Wake on PC forced gamers to buy a 360. I agree with that. But it is no different than Sony pushing Blu-ray on gamers and forcing them to pay $600 for a console. Alan wake quickly dropped in price. The PS3 didn't. And it has been my experience that most PC gamers, especially the ones that would be attracted to that game, most likely wouldn't buy a console for any reason.
Work on your senses.
@ frelyler
"Instead M$ would rather try and force people to buy a 360 just to play one game. That is their mentality and you would have to offer a hell of a lot more than just one game for me to even consider investing in another machine. M$ greed = loss of revenue to original company."
Now replace Alan Wake with Blu-ray and loss of revenue to the original company with loss of revenue to Sony.
@colleen-wyndam
You're comparing apples and oranges. The PS3, 360 and Wii are all price for the mainstream market. Lamborghinis aren't. So the Camry will always outsell it.
But you are right about it selling. Just like fans of anything else they will buy their favorite products. Plus the Wii will be far more powerful than the 360 and PS3(and priced competitively) so many others will buy it.
Baka-akaB so you believe they are just complaining to be complaining. You have to be a huge fanboy to believe that. They said they didn't make money. If what you say is true then why didn't they. And wasn't the game heavily discounted early on?
And any game that sells 2 or 3 million is a very popular game. It's more likely that a game will sell around a million. More likely less.
And the game was at almost 1.4 at the end of '08. Not the b...
1.5 million doesn't always mean profit. This generation made it even harder to make a profit with those numbers. And developing exclusively on a new console, with new architecture and a small develop was a mistake. But NT believed(and many others) the PS3 would catch the 360 in months like Sony said.
But having a long develop period. Many issues, little financing and little help from Sony in any way also hurt.
Plus 1.5 sold in the first few months is no...
There is a new generation starting this year. Sony and Microsoft won't be able to compete with Nintendo soon.

Microsoft doesn't benefit from movies on DVD. But they do get a piece of movies downloaded from Zune. They have no skin in the DVD movie game but make a good deal of money on DD and Silverlight. It would be in their best interest to push no disc.
All gaming machines have a lot more power in them. As techniques for getting power out of CPUs and GPUs gets better, new ways to exploit the parts will allow for better looking and handling software. Things developed in two years can be applied to older machines based on the same general principles. It's why games get better as the generation goes on.
It would make the machines cheaper. And there is no reason games couldn't come on a card like the Vita or even an SD card. They could even allow you to go to the store and have the game downloaded to your thumbdrive. Or a special thumbdrive that comes with the system. That would kill the used games market like they want but still include retailers. It could be done through kiosk at the retailer with credit and debit cards. It would also make the machines smaller.
How many years have we been hearing this. I read an article where a developer said there are so many things that could be done with older machines. Machines that everyone thought were maxed out. It's not that the machine gets any stronger. It's the techniques used on the machines. Five years from now someone will make a new engine and show that there was more that could be done.
This totals to 14.6 GB which is nearly 3 GB larger than the total size of the last Mass Effect entry (Note: size taken from PSN digital download version).
Wasn't the article saying that the PSN size was for Mass Effect 2.
Everyone has a piracy problem, but overpriced storage isn't the answer. And they do all do it. I think it's just an excuse to make extra money. The parts never cost that much when you buy the system. Agreed that Sony has done this all of the time, but they should have realized how much it has cost them at this point. The Vita pricing makes me believe they haven't learned.
And yes they have always tried to push their own format. But it has usually blown up in their...
Expecting $60 for 3 or 4 hours of a campaign and multiplayer is kind of a scam. Maybe they need to sell the two separately. There are a lot of games that have campaigns I didn't bother to finish. I would have gladly paid half price for just the multiplayer.
When Bethesda charges the $60 for a game as big as Skyrim, something is wrong with some of the other companies. So having the nerve to charge for "DLC" day 1 is out of line.
Nice post. I don't agree with the learned from the mistakes of PS3 part. If they had learned they wouldn't have switched from UMD. Trying to push a new format. They should have just used MicroSD or gave a 32gb card with the console. Charging $300 and then wanting people to pay another $100 for the needed card is greedy. Also wanting people to pay $300 for a $160 machine is greedy.
Greed caused Sony's problems with the PS3. Blu-ray was about taking movie royalties ...
This might be a success among PC users, but that is a small market compared to console gamers. And who is willing to pay $700 for a machine that will be middle of the road once the next generation consoles release. And they will be $400. PC gamers want top of the line graphics, not 4 year life cycles. The thing would be outdated in the PC world in 6 months after it's release.
Could be a Halo MMO.
