Also it's a big win for Nvidia for the tegra processor line. I think they sold more in a month with the switch than they ever have. I think this will also give Nvidia a reason to really try to improve or make the next gen of tegra chips available to for consumer electronics faster.
The biggest thing that sells the switch is the convenience. Nintendo is doing a good job of marketing the console to young adults who don't have the time to sit in front of the tv, but they do have time while traveling and they also have money.

Also many of the popular devs from the 3ds are starting to move over to the switch, which is really going to help.
As long as they get the 3rd party support that they had for the 3ds to move to the switch they'll be fine. So far a lot of the 3ds devs are moving to the switch, with a little ubisoft and ea sprinkled in they're in good shape.

The memory chips (32GB) in the switch is the same one that apple, samsung, and others use, so there is some competition for them to put in orders.

The tech wasn't there in 2012 unfortunately. If they had anything that could do what the switch does it would've been expensive as hell and probably wouldn't work as well.

You do know that discs are a obsolete form of media and that solid state memory is much better. That's why none of the switch games need to be installed and I don't think anyone really cares if an mmo has a physical copy.
