BD does have a higher bit rate. Why? Simple. When BD was launched it used the old tried & true MPEG-2 codec which required the higher bitrate. VC-1 is more advanced and as long as you have a minumim bitrate of about 18mbit/s you're good. HD DVD does that, likewise BD does that as well so bitrate issue is not an issue, just marketing spin by the BDA group.

DJ, you are wrong my fanboy friend. It's been confirmed already that TL51 HD disks CAN read in all current and new HD DV...

It's the same as HD DVD, but with more disk space (which for movies isn't needed) and costs more (player and manufacturing wise). They both run the VC-1 codec and hence, same video and audio so long as the studio packs the same movie on both formats with the same exact content.

Now watch as I get constant disagrees from the bluboys...

edit: To below. When it comes to MOVIES, disk space difference between the two is irrelevant meaning the studios have extra space...

Go take a look at the rumors behind why Paramount, Dreamworks & Warner went neutral at the 11th hour. Go take a look at why else Fox, Disney, Lionsgate, etc etc went BD exclusive.

Here's a hint... Sony & the BDA threw $ there way too

You'll find the infamous 'no comment' when Fox & Disney were asked if they received payment or incentives to go BD

but this movie Hairspray mentioned isn't one I care for, ESPECIALLY in high def. BD can keep it for all I care. Now if it were a real blockbuster hit worthy of high definition, like Transformers, then I'ld be all over it

Pirates first mission when ripping a movie is to throw away any security features including region coding. To top it off region coding makes it harder for the consumer to get a movie to play in his American player (sans HD DVD thanks to region free coding).

Imagine going to Europe on vacation and picking up a movie on disk of a movie you saw there only to find out when you came back stateside it doesn't play in your US player and to watch it you have to buy a European player, a...

buh bye BD/PS3 fanboy

but before you leave, ask yourself if movies really need 50gb or not cuz the answer is no

6702d ago 0 agree1 disagreeView comment

sadly most of the sony fans will still preach dominance and superiority due to being blinded by their brand loyalty

to 9.2, 50 gb is not needed. Paramount's 1st announced exclusive HD DVD release was stated to have all the video and audio space that BD fanboys preach HD DVD doesn't have. So essentially that additional disk space for movies is nothing more than a sales tactic and a way to get people like yourself to believe that it really is needed. Look at BD25 based movies an...

means Warner is probably waiting until how sales look this Xmas. BD isn't doing how they should be doing but the HDM war can be tipped to either side. If Warner did go exclusive to HD DVD (most likely) than see how studios from the competing side lose exclusivity and go neutral or switch camps completely. I don't think the world was ready for BD, especially BDA and Sony. BD player costs are too high (for the average consumer), BD manufacturing costs are too high, BD yield ratios aren't doing ...

Please... really... show me the proof. Because everywhere I go, everywhere I see, everything I read on it says otherwise. Says it's just about dead even.

You must love your PS3 huh

6702d ago 0 agree0 disagreeView comment

everytime i read a Sony fanboy preaching HD DVD is already dead.

It's hysterical to say the least. Dead? FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR from it youngin. Do a little research outside the proBD & proSony websites and you'll be shocked and surprised at how miniscule the HDM market is and how dead even it is right now. So if HD DVD is dead, so is Blu-Ray ;)

It's a pissing contest right now. HD DVD realized that their HD15 (15gb) and HD30 (30gb) disks are plenty enough to hold everything a movie needs to hold, including lossless audio and extra bonus features. Their TL51 (50gb) disks is to counter BD50 (50gb) disk capacity that those in the know, know 50gb isn't needed for movies

Besides, if rumors are true, BDA is having some small issues making good BD50 disks and the costs are far greater than the competition.

Wh...

if studios released their movies on all platforms. any 'exclusivity' can be geared towards timed exclusives.

won't happen though. i can dream right

to stella, hd dvd a dead format? ORLY?! then by that account, bluray itself is dead too... i mean after all, sony stated the total HDM market was 1% now, and that is with a 1.5:1 edge for BD even though BD has 10 times the players... frightening isn't it!? the fact that your fanboyistic ways fails to see how more doomed ...

merc3nary, it is bad... why? because sony tooted it's horn about 100% backwards compatibility and now we can see clearly it does not.

it's not a big thing for me but to someone who heard it was and pops his favorite game might be mad at the fact that title isn't on the working list.

preach 100% while taunting the competition, then do 100%

u got to stop man. u annoy everyone on here with your apparent hatred for the format that appears to be making big moves. seems like you are afraid that there's a chance your BD will go the way of betamax.

as for what you said, as usual, it's all BS. as of now no one knows if the TL51 disks will play on gen1 or gen2 players but unlike the BDA group, the Toshiba camp is smart and I think all that is needed is a simple firmware upgrade and voila, TL51 disks play on these players...

this 'war' is far from over

this news has already been stated as a big blow due to ch-dvd players being able to read hd dvd disks

and this also confirms that only sony fans are the ones who toot BD as the victor long before the 'war' is over and the masses made their choice

1. get a life
2. stop going on BD & PS3 favored websites
3. make an unbiased opinion based on the real facts and not what your brand loyalistic ways thinks you to believe because your numbers you stated alone are off by a large margin

The phaser thing is a studio tacked on item, sort of like a special edition freebe gift.

Exactly how will 'they do anything?' Your ignorant beyond belief with that statement. I bet you don't even own a single BD disk, maybe cuz mommy dearest won't buy it for you

Let's not forget your precious Sony this week said the HDM market was 1% now of over all movie sales, so with that said, what's pathetic is trolls like you sony guys bashing HD DVD when you fail to see t...

How misinformed we are... I think a lot of you Bluguys need to step away from ps3 favored websites/blogs/forums cuz it's evident on your posting. I will agree on you that dual format players will reign supreme. Eventually the masses will want to take part of HDM and since this 'war' will go on for a long time, dual format or not adopting HDM is the only smart choices.

Disney is on the blu side due to them wanting region coding (same goes for the 'advantageous' antipiracy). Sony...

many studies have been done and the consumer who hasn't jumped into HDM has favored HD DVD 3:1.

I would like to mention a Sony PR guy at CEDIA this week showed Sony's "dominance" for the month of July (prior to Paramount/Dreamworks move and Amazon's crazy deals both pro HD DVD). His charts actually showed a decline in overall HDM purchasing. It's no longer 5%, nor 3%. So for those Sonyboys, note that Sony themselves showed the overall HDM market is now 1%.
