The headline makes it sound like Microsoft has taken a hard stance against cross-platform play. The actual article sounds a lot closer to "we like the idea, we just haven't sorted it all out yet."

I think it would make sense for Microsoft to eventually support cross-platform gaming if they actually want to push a common OS across every platform.

I don't see it happening. I loved Ryse, but my experience with both consoles has led me to believe the Ryse/Killzone level of graphics will be standard on PS4 going forward while that level of polish won't be nearly as common on the Xbox One.

Call me crazy, but I really believe the Xbox One wasn't designed with a primary focus on advancing anything related to gaming. The fact that they ripped out so much of what worked so well on the 360 kind of bares that out. ...

After seeing a preview of Mercenary Kings I can't imagine a better game to pick up for PS4 right now. After grabbing extra controllers for Towerfall I'm ready for even more couch co-op goodness. Indie haters are seriously missing out.

It's kind of impossible to give away games that are both good and that noone has played. I'm glad they're focusing on quality titles rather than offering up games nobody has had any interest in playing in the past.

If this were about money it'd be on 360/PS3, there's absolutely no way to deny that.

Simply ditching a WiiU version could be a reaction to low sales expectations, but that doesn't hold up if the game is going to be limited to PS4/Xbox One/PC.

If Nintendo had shown up in 2012 with a competent piece of hardware we might be seeing greater third party support. Unfortunately Nintendo's faithful have made it abundantly clear that Nintendo can...

If this is true then just imagine a Playstation that played Nintendo games. I realize this is heresy, but would it really be so bad?

I found the OWL and the way they implemented voice recordings in Killzone to be a couple of examples of innovation that I've personally really enjoyed. I typically don't get into FPS games but Killzone has been loads of fun.

Look around. I think this comment section qualifies as evidence of mixed reactions.

As far as the praise is concerned, have you ever seen The Last of Us mentioned without immediate gushing praise following shortly after?

"I'm not understanding the need to port ps3 games to ps4."

PS4 owners that haven't played the game yet.

They exist.

I'd like to see them build voice recognition into the console itself and dump Kinect altogether. Either that or show us why Kinect is worthwhile beyond voice recognition. I'm pretty certain neither of those will become a reality though.

I really don't see much changing for the Xbox One until they bring out a nice selection of solid games. Once the games start to flow people will buy the console.

@cbuc1125

I think you may need to rethink your definition of "new hot thing."

The Xbox One Costs $500 and has very few games, and nothing seriously compelling about it at this point.

If you really think that the PS3 just magically lost relevance as of November 2013 you're the one that needs some no-doz.

@Palitera

1. No, we don't have a clue how much effort at all. But the developers do, and they apparently don't think it's a waste of resources.

2. I guess that's up to the developers. I'd expect we'd be looking at a rough drought of game releases if all development stopped on anything that doesn't meet everyone's personal opinion of what constitutes "real next gen games."

3. Nice to hear you have feel...

Massive library of amazing games + less than half the price of the Xbox One + really great games each month with PS Plus subscription = higher sales of PS3.

Where exactly is the "huge WTF" in this equation?

4405d ago 5 agree1 disagreeView comment

Last I checked Microsoft wasn't competing with Nintendo in the handheld business whatsoever.

I guess it makes a certain segment of the gaming community swell with pride a little though. Kind of like a little band-aid to wear over that WiiU shaped boo boo.

You think you have a decent analogy, but you don't. The console war is fought between fanboys. It's not a battle between Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. They're interested in sales, not petty grudges.

Normal people enjoy the platforms that offer them the games they personally enjoy without focusing on whether or not their purchase scores a few imaginary points for the "other team."

It's definitely not a hardware issue. And it's definitely not a big enough deal to warrant a total overhaul of the code.

Well, fortunately they wouldn't have to drop this game to 900p in order to achieve 60fps.

Unfortunately they would have to pretty much rebuild the game from scratch since it's not designed to run at twice it's original speed.

If you really expect every PS3 port to run at 60fps on PS4 you're either deluded or sorely ignorant about how framerate works and how it impacts gameplay.

I think if Halo 5 had been a launch title it could have pushed a couple million additional consoles to be honest.

There's really no reason for a hardcore Halo fan to grab an Xbox One right now though since there most likely won't be another proper Halo release until at least late 2015.

I'm more than happy to grab a PS4 at $399 now and wait a couple years for Halo and Gears to arrive, all while crossing my fingers for an Xbox One price drop by ...

As hard as it may be for you to imagine, there are actually millions of gamers who simply prefer to play games on console. Your preferences do not define reality.

Truth. I really don't see how Xbox One holding a solid second place would be bad for anyone.
