Read the article man. They're only saying it's not a mech game as a form of semantics. He's saying that because you are playing as the pilot, and not the mech. The mech is just your armor. You can get out and run around as the pilot and set traps for other mechs and things like that. Your pilot gets abilities to unlock. Why is it weird? Smash Ultimate is an ode to video game history. Every iconic video game character should be there. It doesn't matter that Doom Guy is from an ultra-violent series. Solid Snake is from a serious toned espionage game.
You can't compare a character's franchise to the rest of the combatants in this series. The fact of the matter is if they are iconic and originated in video games, they deserve to be there.

I don't think it's his his head being too small for his body. I think it's that his body armor is just so bulky that it gives that illusion.
