They'll just end up releasing a Switch U or something similar like they did with the Wii. I don't think the Switch will be able to keep competing with the new consoles. It certainly won't be able to keep running the new generation 3rd party games.

You played it on PC, and I'm assuming PS5. Playing it there was a HUGE improvement over last gen consoles. You know, the consoles the game was advertised for? The consoles they said the game ran fine on all the way up to launch?
There was no hate campaign. It was facts. A company doesn't get sued by their investors and have a game taken down from the PS store if its not bad.

Yep. 100% agree. Exclusives are always extremely important. All one needs to do is look at the Xbox 360 and PS3 generation.
The 360 was beating the PS3 in sales for most of the generation. There are other reasons, like the 360 having over a year head start and people being mad that the PS3 launched at $600. I'll definitely keep an eye on it. Battlefield has been pretty bad for a few years now. BF4 wws the last great BF game, and I don't expect 2042 to go back to its roots. But we'll see.
You're missing a couple important points about the Xbox One launch.
1. Up until that point, no, Xboxes were 100% NOT always connected to some network. You could play your Xbox 360 with no problem at all if you had no internet connection. (Sure, certain games required it, but the console itself did not require an internet connection.)

Its very similat to Xcom but has a lot of features that Xcom has never had, like being able to target specific body parts on enemies, enemy weak points, and things of that nature. But lets not kid ourselves. This was made by the creator of Xcom. Its going to look similar.

Its too late for redemption at this point. Its got such a bad reputation. Nothing will turn all those mad people around. They messed up with the GaaS model, but it still could have been successful as games like Destiny have shown. But the problem is it was monotonous, not fun to play, loot and gear were done terribly, which is the entire point of a GaaS game, and it had too many bugs and issues that never really got fixed.

I get it. The Switch has a dock. But if you want, you can hook it up to your tv and use it as a console. Or are you going to pretend that there aren't plenty of parents out there that ONLY bought a Switch for their kids and acts as their console instead of an Xbox or Playstation? Thats where the competition matters. If a person or family can go buy a Switch instead of a PS or Xbox, then that is called competition. No matter what excuse or story you want to use...
