It's my understanding that players are all in the world and if someone feels like shooting at you and taking your stuff then they can. Is that not right? Because if it is, then that isn't exactly "opting into" it.

I think its hysterical. People use Elder Scrolls Oblivion and Skyrim as an example to defend this. That you can play both FPS and 3rd Person in those games.
I tried to play both of those games in 3rd Person and it is a horrible experience.
