To be fair, Marvel vs Capcom Infinite had a lot of interference from Marvel. Marvel tells them what characters to include and there are even rumors that they had a part in what the visuals would look like.

To be 100% fair, George A Romero's script had a lot of weird stuff in it.
It was definitely much closer to the game as far as the story but the characters had a lot of weird stuff going on with them. Also, it's important to remember that Romero hasn't made a good zombie film in a very very long time. I enjoyed Diary of the Dead, but everything after that has been absolute garbage.
