im a senior in high school and i streetpass 6-9 people with 3ds' every day, and this is before pokemon releases. i think portables will always have a niche. im sure the 3ds will have at least 75 million lifetime sales and this will render it well beyond profitable and definitely warrant a successor. i hope the same for the vita :D
as someone whos put 4 hours into the demo over the past few weeks, the game could do with a patch to sharpen the line between whip, hammer and fist but it is by no means a game breaker
i get that the wii u isn't exactly a powerhouse, but it isnt a damn atari. the system is proving that it can deliver original, and impressive gaming at good resolution and framerate. if it can push graphics better than latter day ps3/360 in higher resolution and framerate (see bayonetta 2 and mario kart 8 amongst others) then im satisfied. thats what i expected from next gen, and what im getting from the system.

the general consensus is that microsoft did much better with multiplats because of straight forward architecture. john carmack, one of the most revered and praised programmers in history said the ps3 took twice the manpower to develop for.
