I think you are right.
Maybe they are ditching the lan component so that people are forced to play on battlenet, in which case the authenticity of the software can be verified.
For Blizzard, it would seem to make more sense to secure an additional 1 million paying customers this way, than to lose the 100k users who will (maybe) not buy the game due to the lack of lan.

As time went on, MS was unable to reduce the manufacturing cost of the xbox1, because the designs were owned by the manufacturers.
In effect, Nvidia was making a tidy profit on its xbox1 graphics card.
MS tried to reduce the cost by negotiating with nvidia, but nvidia was milking its contract ...
