I grew up on sideways and vertical scrolling shoot-em-ups. Xenon, Xenon II, 1942, Hybris, the R-Type series, etc, etc. I wish someone would release a next-gen sideways scroller with all the bells and whistles!

I take great offence at your last comment. I do have kids and what concerns me is that as soon as Sony releases a new toy for the PS3 all we get is comments about how it will be great for adult fun. Whether in jest or not its still concerning as it shows where the mindset seems to be focussing. Of course I don't and won't allow my kids to play poker but the cam won't just compliment poker now will it!!!

The rain effects looked nothing more than ok. I was especially displeased with the level of water particle effects that trailed the cars when they were hurtling down the track. As for the scenes where the cars are stationary I couldn't see any rain actually hitting the car.

First off, I'm not going to compare this to anything on the PS3 as personally I don't give a damn about what's on the PS3 however, I'm not quite sure what to make of it really. The handling was good from the two A class cars I tested but they still looked like shiny plastic models on a rendered track. The reflections still don't impress as cars don't reflect cars and car shadows just didn't sit well with me either. At least the frame rate was rock solid!

...current install base is an issue. This is one of only a couple of killer franchises the PS3 has left and I dare say its developers will be wanting some record sales figures from it.
I for one found these games so hard to get into (not hard to play). You had some great action and stealth set pieces broken up by some b-grade dialog. It also felt like you were always tapping on the controller more to skip quickly through dialog than you were playing the actual game!
