The full statement:
“Whether it’s for games, films or anime, we don’t have that much IP that we fostered from the beginning. We’re lacking the early phase (of IP) and that’s an issue for us.”
Sony has way more original IP for games than for films and anime. Their biggest movies are Spider-Man and Venom and they are both Marvel IP. Not sure about what Sony has for anime.
The Xbox brand was built on bringing the hardcore PC game experience to consoles. Games like Halo, Morrowind, Half-Life 2, and Splinter Cell brought in the adults. Even the infamous “Duke” controller was built for adult hands. If Microsoft wants to keep the Xbox hardware relevant, they will stick to hardcore games for grownups.
“guess 'some' reviewers didn't want the game to settle at a higher average rating”
Were the big bad reviewers mean to your precious widdle game?
“it’s clear that the ‘games as a service’ model is becoming a bubble that’s likely to burst sooner rather than later”
Games as a service has been around since at least 1997 with “Ultimate Online”. Safe to say that games as a service is here to stay, and publishers will keep fighting for player’s attention and dollars.
Over 140M Switch owners are going to still buy games. So yes, we will see cross platform Switch games for a long time.
The controller is 100% a collectors item.
“I couldn’t be happier.”
Why? 150 folks may lose their jobs. I hope the game comes back and finds some success as a free-to-play title.
“we’ve” been around a long time and have seen a lot of games fail. “Daikatana comes to mind. This won’t end Sony and Sony certainly expected many of their live service games would fail. They already saw “Destruction All Stars” fail.
This depends how old you are. I remember ET, Daikatana, and Too Human. I remember Dreamcast, a hardware ecosystem that failed. Those were high profile failures. There are a bunch of failures that even I have forgot. Remember all the other hero shooters that failed? I don’t. Remember all the battle royals games that failed? I don’t either.
Concord’s budget was not $200M. There is a lot of bad speculation on the budget for Concord based on the amount Sony has spent on single player games and the cost to acquire Firewalk Studios. Firewalk Studios employed roughly 150 people in May 2023, according to fandom.com, and at an average of $100,000 / person for 2 years, that’s $30M. (I know people focus on 8 years of development, but it was 6 years of thinking about the idea and 2 years of actual development.) Folks also forget about Dai...
SSD was a huge promise delivered this gen. No a.i. bullshit is going to top that.
Oof no. It’s appropriately if not overrated.
The number of console units sold each generation looks like it peaked in the 6th generation. Xbox 360 + PS3 + Wii + DS + PS Portable = 500M units sold. 7th gen, PS4 + Xbox One + WiiU + 3DS + Vita = 281M. 8th gen PS5 + Xbox Series + Switch looks like its going to sell about 305M units. 8th gen will likely be an improvement over 7th gen but lagging behind gen 6. With the number of devices that can play console quality games, we will likely never reach that 6th gen peak every again.
Nintendo is a good example of this. Switch by itself has sold 100M units less than Wii + DS. So while Nintendo is selling less units overall, the one product is a huge success.
“They expected to maybe get a Halo-like game”
Sony knew what they were getting with Destiny. Reports are that Bungie inflated its numbers (and deflated others, like costs), but Sony knew the gold was in getting an audience to buy season passes and cosmetic micro-transactions. What I want personally is a Halo like game. Not live service hell. Not an extraction shooter. I’d pay $70 at launch for a Halo on PS5.
“So, how does a seven-year-old game keep the barrier to entry low enough for new players without alienating the established vateran fan base?”
For starters, it’s a “veteran” fan base. The game is also not 7 years old. Destiny 10 years old and a lot of Destiny 1 content like raids and patrol zones are in Destiny 2 now. For finishers, Bungie keeps the barrier of entry low by recycling weapons.
There is an opportunity for a pun here, but tech4gamers fails miserably.
50% to 75% of Xbox Series consoles are Series S. This will be the experience for most Xbox Series owners.
This review is about a week too late.
VR companies are appropriately investing in and supporting the platform. VR is still niche, generally uncomfortable to wear, difficult with glasses ,still causes motion sickness, and requires a play space that a lot of people don’t have.
