I don't get the acquiring a publisher bit. All three are already making IPs for the PS ecosystem. The only thing to gain by doing so is to prevent those IPs from appearing on your competitors, a la MS-Bethesda deal. If we're talking publishers, why not Konami? A bunch of high profile IPs lying dormant that appeal to the PS base? Acquire HM, Bluepoint, Kojima, and Konami's assets. by and large though the Resistance IP featured many protagonists (4 altogether I think if you include the portables). One of the reasons I enjoyed it was not being shackled to individual story arcs. Very rare for a major franchise.

You weren't sure the Switch would sell? It's a handheld. The lowest selling Nintendo handheld is the 3DS at 75 mil. The Switch is a far better designed system than its predecessor. Now Nintendo consoles on the other hand are another story and I doubt Ninty ever releases another one.
