I didn't say sony didn't get any money from blu-ray nor did I say that microsoft makes more money, I said sony is not the sole beneficiary and only recieves a fraction of the total royalty paid as a result.

SMPTE is a standards association. MPEG LA, an intellectual property rights management firm, is the entity which collects on behalf of the codec patent holders.

Sony only gets a small fraction of the royalties from the blu-ray standard, they are only one of the nine major electronics firms that founded the Blu-ray standard and they are only one of the eighteen firms making up the Blu-ray Disc Association which continues to develop and collect royalties on the Blu-ray standard and there are dozens of other companies that own and collect royalties from the BDA on the critical patents that the blu-ray standard requires, ironically, Microsoft being one o...

Oh really?!

Hate to blow your misconception out of the water but $869 pretty much pulverizes the PS4 and has free online and cheaper games to boot.

What?!

The 4870, that launched 5 years ago in 2008, is a 2.4 TFLOPS GPU. What's the PS4 again? Oh yeah, 1.84 TFLOPS. And the XBOne? 1.23 TFLOPS.

SOOOO many people here that have been harping on live for being a pay to play service for SOOOO many years are suddenly giant fans of pay to play! The sheer hypocrysy and irony of it all is so epically mind blowing!

I simply can't believe how many of the people that would argue against pay to play (live) until they were blue in the face are now arguing FOR it right here, right now!

I can't believe the comments I'm reading supporting pay to pl...

But the console cpus, which were originally developed for kiosks, tablets and entry level laptops with only 0.5MB per core of cache, are very weak processors. The console gpus and cpus also have to share memory bandwidth, even for the PS4 it's a middling 176 GB/s of total bandwidth and the speed of the hard drive, likely only a 5400rpm laptop drive, is underwhelming. The performance of the GPU, even the ps4's 1.84 TFLOPS, is at the very bottom range of what any PC gamer would even con...

Seems like an awful waste, why not spend the $60 for a separate 1TB drive for gaming and use it?

There are definitely some great exclusives on consoles but there are also some great exclusives on PC too. The entire RTS and MMO genres essentially don't exist on consoles and there is a distinct hole for really deep strategy titles such as Civilization or Total War too. And even though consoles are starting to get better for the independent devs, PC is still a crazy breeding ground for them. Add in all the content generated by the mod crowd, enough to make any multiplat seem like an ...

It has 10GB of memory available to it, 2GB GDDR5 and 8GB of DDR3.

You're right, I sometimes miss things because I am on upgrade cycles. Windows is $100 and an optical drive is $18. There is virtually no benefit to having a blu-ray drive in a PC which reduces to zero benefit if you already own a blu-ray player. Actually, most blu-ray drives read DVDs slower so for pc gaming it would be a detriment.

You talk about how "consoles use their given power more efficiently because they have streamlined and optimized OS which doesn't require as many resources" but you don't talk about how the weaknesses of the PS4 totally offset any gain achieved. The ps4's cpu which was originally developed for kiosks, tablets and entry level laptops with 0.5MB per core of cache is a very weak processor. The ps4's gpu and cpu also have to share the middling 17...

I agree that PS3 has pulled ahead of the 360 but the 80.4 million number is definitely ps3 and ps2 numbers added together for the fy2012.

In this interview on Feb. 21st, Jack Tretton says "on a worldwide basis, we’ve sold the same, if not more, devices. I think we’re at 77 million sold right now — it’s basically splitting hairs."

You keep making up this "64 independent compute channels" number. PS4 has 18 compute units.
