...you're suggesting that monotony is NOT an appropriate reason to dislike a game? Monotonous mission objectives have long been one of the defining weaknesses of the MMO canon. This game is no different.

Haha, yeah, that was great.

And what is with all these "should XXX be in games" articles? Why should games be held to a different standard than any other medium?

Obviously, there are games out there that use subjects like violence and sex as an exploitative method to sell games, but as a medium, games should be just as free to explore these kinds of themes as any other medium.

...the many, many "next big MMO's" that failed to net enough profit and inevitably went free-to-play?

I don't understand why this is even an issue. We are apparently free to depict people dying left and right in an historical context, and yet we are not allowed to even ADDRESS the subject of race? Even if it's clearly presented as wrong in that context?

Naw, screw that. Let the stupid people complain.

There is no objectification going on anywhere.

It's just devs assuming (rightly, apparently) that most gamers are horny nerds that want to see boobies every second of the day, context be damned.

I like looking at tits as much as the next guy, but it's getting a little goddamn ridiculous at this point.

Not every game needs to be potential fap material, for gods sake.

@sam1mur

I fail to see your point. You can spout off numbers all you want. Diablo 3 and Simcity buyers were STILL pissed off at the DRM even given their ability to connect to the internet. It has nothing....NOTHING to do with whether or not a consumer is capable of connecting to the internet. What percentage of people complaining here on N4G do you think have internet access?

And what's really pissing consumers off is that these dickhole developers (like ...

Maybe one day, though.

Yeah, it's such a weird article. People are actually just angry that his comments present further evidence that the next Xbox is going to be "always on." It's a problem that the author himself acknowledges....in the same article.

I mean yeah, Orth said some ridiculously stupid things, so the first law of the internet dictates that a shitstorm commence, but people are pissed at MICROSOFT itself because "always on" seems almost inevitable at this poi...

I'd say it's probably because for the longest time the game was under a quietly publicized threat of cancellation.

Developers were sacked and hired and funding was iffy for quite a while if I remember correctly, so it's probably just a matter of them parring down the scope to account for that uncertainty.

What's really gonna blow your mind is when you play the game over and realize that they were building up toward that ending through the entire narrative.

I thought it was off the wall too, but then...it just makes so much sense going through it again.

Both Battlefront and KOTOR were already developed by third party developers, just published by LucasArts.

And Disney now holds the licensing rights to the Star Wars universe, so if any Star Wars games are going to be made, it's almost definitely going to be through third party developers with Disney Interactive playing the role of publisher. They can do whatever they want with the franchise. After all, they're the ones that dissolved LucasArts in the first place.

^ That's part of what I'm saying, though. It doesn't cease to be a shooter simply because there are stretches of the game that don't involve shooting. If anything, pouring more effort into context is what makes the violence more interesting and entertaining. It's what sets singleplayer gaming apart from mindless multiplayer deathmatching.

Maybe you play as Vaas, and this is how he sees the world.

Pretty sure that's just Cher singing.

I don't think that's understanding the problem either. Violence has become such a nonchalant occurrence in gaming that it means next to nothing when it is portrayed.

Violence is perfectly fine to have in video games, but when you have a game with a narrative and context, violence needs to be just as contextually relevant as everything else in that narrative, and in video games (probably more than any other medium) it almost NEVER is.

I mean...you quit...

If it is, then it's no sale from me. Easy as that. It won't even be a difficult decision, to tell the truth.

^The reaction here in the comments is more revealing than the actual video, to be honest....funnier too.

Seriously. The color palette is intentionally muted and pastel. The mods make it look oversaturated at best, like an acid trip at worst.

There are very few games that disturb me with their violence, either because it is almost always represented completely unrealistically or in a way that is very discernibly black and white.

But even with the old-school graphics, there's something...ridiculously unsettling about the killing in this game. It's so cold and surgical. Which personally I think is a good thing. There are VERY few games that make you realize the horror of what you're actually doing.
