@Disccordia: oh PCs are blowing the PS3 way out of the water and they have been since the PS3 got released. The fact that my PC can run stupid resolutions like 2560X1600 or run certain current gen games at over 100fps just proves that and it's not even that high end.

The limitation is the software, driven by consoles.

I wouldn't be surprised if Sony were to take this route...I can't say that I'm happy seeing such a tiny step in technology from both MS and Sony.

They certainly won't be getting my money this time if those specs hold true.

Apple makes great hardware, a bit pricey, but still very high quality. Their software integration is second to none.

Brand recognition goes a long way, if they do get a console out, there will be games, all publishers will flock to it...who wouldn't? And millions would buy it.

An Apple console that integrates all Apple services that millions of people use daily (iPhone, iPad, AppleTV, iTunes, iCloud, etc...) and steam now? Even XBLive would be put to...

That can't be true, use dedicated servers, like minecraft...why does it have to be a single persistent world, is it an MMO? Because we all know monthly fee based MMOs don't work aside from a select few...bad idea.

I am really excited about this, but I will never ever ever pay a monthly fee for a game no matter how good it may be.

Come on Notch don't do this to us...

What a genius, I bet he figured this out all by himself...gees, this has always been the case for every generation...Atari games were mare by a small teams with super small budgets compared to today's games...the market was also smaller then so the price was relatively the same as it is now (based on inflation).

Game budgets, just like movie budgets keep on getting bigger and bigger. That being said, I do believe that console architecture will become more and more similar...

I myself still fondly remember Indigo Prophecy...Now take a good story like that and add this level of graphical fidelity, removing immersion breaking elements and you might even have some sort of hybrid game/movie genre.

I can definitely see a hybrid game/movie genre. It could be episodic, say you buy the "game" for 10$ it tells a story that lasts about 2 hours, with another following every few months. Essentially watching an interactive movie and using something ...

An iPad2 starts at 520$ and an iPhone4s without a contract is 650$...that's close to 1200$ worth of hardware...all that without a thumb stick...for the price of an iPhone4s you can get both a PS3 and a Vita.

just sayin'

I don't like where the next-gen is going...I don't want tablets, I don't want to be the controller, I don't want casual touch screen games (I have a phone for that). I want true next-gen core games with photo realistic graphics and awesome physics.

If they sacrifice performance over gimmicky peripherals as it seems to be the case for Nintendo and MS...I won't be getting any of the new consoles...I'll stick with my PC thank you very much. Here's...

Why always compare to the iPhone...the PSV isn't trying to compete with the iPhone or else they would have put a Phone in it...It's a handheld gaming device, people content with their IPhone will not buy the PSV, it's for people (like me) who think gaming on an iPhone is mediocre at best and want a more full fledged gaming experience.

This is for the hardcore...think about it...there is no other hardcore handheld gaming device...it captures a market...will the mar...

For those who say things like consoles have direct access to hardware and don't have to use APIs so it's faster. Id's like to remind everyone that they intend to have Windows 8 running on the console...If anything, windows is a resource hog, sure it'll be customized, but they intend to use DX11...an API.

My guess is that they are aiming for a low price point and a balancing act between Hardcore and Casual...meaning that hardcore will be the loosers here. a...

All of this footage is from XBox360...a seven year old console. Oblivion and Skyrim are the same generation, with that in mind, the graphical leap is amazing.

Because MS is the sponsor they will not show PS3/PC gameplay. PC would likely make the 360 look as dated as it is...and who knows for PS3.

My point is that if you're expecting a console generation type leap then you'll be disappointed (still just 512Mb of RAM, my phone has twice that much)...I ...

I don't believe we'll see a gen shift like we've seen last time...I don't think consoles will be much different in terms of architecture than what they are now...technology hasn't changed dramatically(more cores, more memory, Tessellation). The other difference is that both PS3 and 360 will stick around for a while after PS4/720. This means that most probably PS4/720 will be backwards compatible.

That being said the main reason I think we need a next-gen...

There are 3 types of gamers...Hardcore, Casual and COD.

Gees you'll be fine for a while...Consoles lead the industry, so games on PC are pretty limited. Until recently I had an 8800GTX and was playing most of the recent games at max settings (or close).

If you feel that you need more, your logical upgrade path should be SLI, you have the PSU for it...here's hoping your motherboard has 2xPCIe.

I wouldn't worry about Skyrim either.

There are notable games that are exclusive to PC (Civilization, Minecraft, Starcraft, diablo, WOW, Guild Wars...) but that's beside the point cause consoles are dirt cheap...Anyone that has a gaming rig should have the money to get a console.

I have both and I play both equally for the reason you mentionned...so I guess that I agree with your statment (except that I would change "ever" for "recently")...

I'm kinda split on this one...I believe we need new consoles because games are seriously stagnating...I'm not talking about just graphics here...There's AI, concurrent players, storage (no HDD, DVD9), Physics, 1080P (yeah, I definately see the difference), high resolution textures.

On the other hand, the first two years of any new console gen suck because the user base is too small, then there's the learning curve for developers (may be a reason not to wai...
