The author of the article makes a good point at the end. If the reason is actually the upcoming Summer 2020 Olympics, then how come Nintendo has not been as overbearing as Sony and more permissive of fanservicey games? I would also like to add that shouldn't Sony just mention that in the first place? Instead, it's "Won't someone please think of the children!?".

We're not talking about what fits your definition of censorship. This is about the DEGREE of censorship and that a platform holder (Sony, in this case) is censoring games even though ratings boards have already given them a thumbs up.

Your strawman didn't work before. Repeating the same strawman argument ad infinitum isn't going to work now.

Not surprised to see that the go-to responses to the author is labeling him as a pervert while conflating actual porn with games with sexual content. I'm also not surprised that many folks here are only focused on the content of the games that are being censored as opposed to the principle of creative freedom.

Sony garnered a reputation of letting their 1st party developers do what they want and be not as overbearing in collaboration efforts with 3rd party developers (s...

Maybe, just maybe you should stop caring so much about anime fan service games when their presence in the market doesn’t affect anyone negatively. You don’t like it? Don’t buy it.

It’s the same old arguments from people like you. You inject subjectivity to a subset of video games and revolve your moral compass around that rather than revolving it around a set of principles.

Nice ad hominem attack. It's the usual tactic from you pro-censorship folks. Attack the person/source, but never address the actual points presented.

Hey, it's better to have lower expectations than to have your hopes so high :P

The only other time I've seen a Change.org petition work in the gaming industry was the Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth localization petition.

Good job not addressing any portion of my arguments. Saying "You are already being censored in most games anyway" is not a valid refutation. You are just equivocating once again.

Here are the questions that should be asked:

- How come the intimacy mode is getting removed from Senran Kagura Re:Newal when it was available in Shinovi Versus and Peach Beach Splash on the PS4 without garnering widespread negative attention?
- How is Sony Japan's explanation that the censorship policy is being enforced to "protect the children" a valid reason when the games that are affected by the policy are not even geared towards children?

The problem is that like any big corporation who holds massive share of a market, they tend to exert even more control. Sony has this misguided notion that us, the consumers, are lost lambs that must be shepherded by Big Brother. The principles of artistic freedom and letting the consumer make his/her own decisions are thrown out the window. Who cares about principles if you make tons of money?

It's a very contradictory statement by Sony. The games that they have been censoring have/will have an M rating in NA or a C (15+)/D (17+) rating in Japan. How can their censorship policy's purpose be to protect kids when the games that are hit by the policy aren't even made for children in the first place?

"Oh won't anyone please think of the children!" is the laziest excuse I've heard for censorship. I'm not sure if Sony is being completely incompetent or using that excuse to handwave away the legitimate criticisms against their policy.

There's a far simpler way to tackle the children 'issue'. You simply make sure the parents know how to make educated purchases so that their kids don't end up playing games with content not fit for them. ...

It also adds more work and time for the developer. Having to appeal to SIE HQ in English only during US hours is rather unnecessary. Being forced to remove features may lead to delays as we saw with XSEED removing the intimacy feature in Re:Newal.

We've seen Idea Factory standing their ground and vow to not capitulate to Sony's draconian policies. I hope that Marvelous does the same and just stick with PC/Switch.

And why do you care if the characters of other games are underaged when (1) the game is not porn and (2) they’re not real people nor are they depicted in a realistic art style? I would say the person getting all outraged is you considering you care so much about something that is inconsequential. What ever happened to the “ignore and move on” principle?

@jznrpg

Then how come this policy hasn't come into effect until recently? We've gone through the PS3 and most of the PS4's lifecycles with games of various degrees of sexual content without much complaints. And yet, now it's a huge problem to SIE.

@Dark_Knightmare2

No, it's because Sony thinks that we have to be babied rather than letting us decide what games to purchase ourselves. Apparently, to Sony, the "Don't like it, don't buy it" principle is meaningless. As a result, a bunch of us are taking our business elsewhere where we can practice our consumer freedom without corporate interference.

Hentai is actual porn. Depiction of boobs is not porn. This is a rather common tactic I see a lot from censorship apologists. They do their damn hardest to associate ecchi games with actual porn to make those games sound way worse than they actually are. What are you? Stewie seeing Hustle Magazine for the very first time?

Bmx xxx had an AO rating, which made the censorship actually necessary in that context because AO games aren't allowed to be sold in stores. And of course, the "porn" card is always played when people criticize censorship. Might as well put that in my bingo card: https://cdn.discordapp.com/...

Vote with your wallet. Buy the version that is not censored. There's also a petition that has been slowly getting signatures. The significance of the petition to Sony is likely negligible, but it's worth a shot: https://www.change.org/p/so...
