"Nothing to do with it."

If I'm Nadella, and I promote Spencer to where he is now, he'd better be a part of all of these deals. Whether that is with direct input or just passive knowledge, the days of MS operating as seperate little islands needs to die for their sake. That's been a positive change for them in recent years though.

The irony is that people are quick to "blame" Spencer and Xbox for MS's shift to services ...

@tosh
Flip side of what? I don't quite understand that one.

But what have they done with the Rare IPs? Squandered, wasted, ignored mostly.

I'm just pointing out that, at the time of the Rare acquisition, the major reason for the high price tag was the back catalog and IP owned by Rare. The major leadership had left already and Nintendo's complaints about the studio were well known.

With Insomniac, you're really ...

Really not sure of what IPs Insomniac actually owns that are worth much. Sony already owned the big ones, didn't they?

2179d ago 7 agree6 disagreeView comment

With Rare, they basically just paid for IPs.

With insomniac, they paid for the talent.

@rainslacker

Of course it will take a long time to see serious returns from just Sony's potential use of MS cloud services. That's not a business built for immediate returns obviously. It will add to the snowball effect I am sure they are hoping for over the next few decades.

I still think Rackspace will continue to expand on those Google partnerships until fully acquired. Just my side note there, but Sony needs to look a bit bigger imo.

I appreciate that both groups of fanboys will be offended by these results.

Not the same dev. I'm sure the engine borrowed from their other open world game, Sunset Overdrive, but that's not what the article is discussing.

It's about writing the story. That's the script being discussed.

All good points. I think even the "journalists" blur the lines between the sectors (to generate clicks most times). Too many people fall for it and fail to see the various parts in play though.

I look at it as when we talk of Microsoft's competition and future in gaming, it's inclusive of Azure, back end stuff, Windows, Mixer, Xbox, etc. If we're talking about Xbox's future, it's still going to be directly competitive with Sony on console, PS...

"No idea why people like the author believe that in order to have a successful cloud business one must own the cloud."

You're referring to just service vs. service. "Cloud business" is a different market. These companies have invested 100+ billion into Azure, AWS, and Google cloud for more than just Stadia, xcloud, or whatever Amazon has planned by offering services directly to consumers. The real cloud business is aimed at signing up service provid...

First, of course it's PR. What interview isn't? He goes out of his way to say that his comments aren't meant as a slight against Sony and Nintendo. Like so many times before, people who can't get past the console wars willfully look at it as a snub though.

Reality is you're commenting about an article that is discussing all of the things I mentioned. No, it's not just about game streaming. Hence the discussion of AWS backend, Twitch, Apple app store,...

Still thinking too small imo, and Spencer's role within MS cannot exist within some vacuum.

Best case scenario for the short term would be if Xcloud becomes the leader in its small segment of cloud use. That would be a footnote in their history book. Best case scenario in the long term is if Xcloud, PSNow, PSN, and Nintendo network utilize Azure, along with all the other corporations and governments they're signing up for a variety of uses. Amazon doesn't care w...

This will sound harsh, but nobody even thinks about Sony as being in the cloud business. I don't mean nobody as in gamers or Playstation vs. Xbox fighters. I mean nobody in bigger tech. Because gaming is what? 10% of MS's business. Nadella has been the one that has been behind their transition to the cloud as the leading focus for MS as a whole. This is trillion-dollar Microsoft's future.

Gaming is a part of that. But what Sony has invested into cloud is a drop ...

When or if Perfect Dark returns, I do think it'll be third person. At some point, they will reintroduce the IP and the world. You look at the resumes of the people forming that team, and I can see it being a 3rd person, narrative driven, action/stealth sci fi game of some kind.

The tough part for MS is that for everyone who shares your opinion, there's someone else asking to revisit an old IP from the vault.

The only way to come close to pleasing ...

That rationale is fair for many games, but not when it's a major franchise from one of the world's largest publishers.

SE had the means to make this game without that check from Sony, just like Tomb Raider didn't need MS money. It's an understandable win win for SE and Sony, but using the whole "it wouldn't be possible without ______" is best saved for timed deals with companies that don't pull in the kind of money that SE does.

The best part is that the employees had to know what was happening, but there's no incentive for them to try to prevent it. The person who took in the trade probably even benefited by hitting whatever stupid quota corporate has going this month.

It's a win for everyone except the mismanaged corporation. A real feel good story.

@Rainslacker.

I got a chuckle out of that. Certain people at MS are accused of lying and misleading shareholders about once a week by many of the faithful around here. But Kamiya is where we're going to take a stand against that kind of rhetoric? Sounds about right, actually.

The stories about Platinum's problems have circulated for some time. Of course I don't think it was actual theft or misappropriation, but Donnie's comment wasn't ...

True. He wasn't involved with the Remedy-developed Max Payne titles, and his brother was behind the manhunt titles.

Are those the "great" games you really feel represent R*? He's credited as an EP on LA Noire btw.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic, but he's literally been involved in every R* game as a writer or producer for almost 20 years.

Both of those numbers aren't what you think.

The 12bn number you're citing is the PSN revenue from last year. I think that includes monetized digital content and games. The big story there is that online store accounted for about 55% of all of Playstations earnings last year.

The 4.31 number you're trying to use is MS's Q2, 2019 Xbox revenue, but its slightly off.

To help clarify, for this last quarter (usually the bigg...

They've mentioned several times that they were considering extending its life more than usual, but I still put it at that 5 1/2 - 6 year mark myself. But since year 2, they've talked about going longer than usual. Here's Miyamoto:

"Up until now, the hardware life cycle has trended at around five or six years, but it would be very interesting if we could prolong that life cycle, and I think you should be looking forward to that.”
