It's still got to be better than the alternative.
Advertising can only do so much, especially when there is only so much space to go around. When steam, PSN, Xbox, and Nintendo storefronts have thousands of games competing for exposure, it gets tough to stand out.
We're getting a dozen plus games released on these digital stores each week. We are constantly hearing complaints from devs of all sizes about being buried on these stores.

My last 2 kb/m setups were $200+. I can't type on them though, so I still need to switch the kb out for anything non-gaming.
If I can defend those kinds of purchases to my skeptical wife, these controllers are cake. I'm waiting for next gen to see if Series 3 offers anything else, or grab the Series 2 at a end-of-life discount.
Depends on what gap we're talking about. I would be shocked if Sony doesn't outsell Xbox in consoles by a big margin. Maybe it will be closer if they handle pricing really aggressively, but I don't see it being substantially closer.
With their PC multiplat strategy, xcloud, and this more gradual cross generation approach to next gen, MS obviously knows that they've significantly reduced to their ability to move consoles. With that in mind, it doesn't pre...
Nope, just pointing out how you consistently label any arguments in favor of this approach as merely "defending Microsoft." Don't start playing the victim.
You've yet to identify that game that is only possible on console. If anything, you could argue that I'm defending PC here. For some reason, you seem to think that miracle advancements are coming because of the inclusion of an ssd on a console.
Whether its simple AI downgrades lik...
Now I'm just going to lie and say that I only sub to GP for the discounts on full priced games. Maybe that will interrupt these crusaders.
Probably not though...
Stop making everything fit into your imaginary console war nonsense. It's petty.
Games scale all the time. You don't seem to refute any of that, but instead try to attack with fanboy bs.
Look at the ports we're seeing on Switch or PSVR right now as an easy example. How about racing games and shooters that have to scale down for consoles? Or any game currently running on PC and console.
If you don't want to look at facts...
@oldboy
Stagnant would be better than regressing back to zero, would it not? When the next Halo releases, instead of being released to a brand new market, they'll have a preexisting install base of 10's of millions to go from.
@muzikguy
Same rationale I just explained appeals to 3rd parties. Remember Ubisoft holding off games early due to low install bases? They're not alone. That's not an issue under the cross-gen appra...
Gotcha. Enjoy your PS5 and its -impossible to achieve anywhere else- games.
You could just read what devs say about it if you don't believe me. You could start by the one I literally quoted for you.
Or use your own common sense. You know how you scale down a game that has "1000" characters on screen? You limit the number of characters on screen. Same with AI. Look at the Shadow of Mordor games from just this gen. When the 360/PS3 ports were made, they couldn't handle the AI systems. You know what they did? They "scaled it dow...
Face it, we've heard that for decades about prior systems and yet there has yet to be a game that can't be run better on PC. Name one PS or Xbox game now that can't be run on a PC.
Next fall, you will be able to buy a faster, more capable gaming system on PC than anything we'll see from Xbox or Sony at launch.
Lower those expectations. Console games were never going to do what you think. PC can already outperform consoles in regards to AI...
No. Literally the opposite.
If you scale up, that means you develop for the lowest specs and then just "scale the game up" to make improvements. Just commonsense should tell you how inefficient that would be.
Instead, you devote your resources to maximize your game at the highest spec, and then "scale it down" to run on weaker platforms.
Practically every dev sans Nintendo will be doing this already if they release ...
Hate to break it to you, but it will both have those things you wanted AND just be an upgraded Xbox. Once it becomes achievable and wholly necessary to really utilize those advancements in technology, we will see games use them.
This will be true of future Xbox games, PC games, and PS games. Same as it's always been.
If you're actually a PC gamer, you really shouldn't have such unrealistic expectations. These ecomically-priced boxes aren't...
@Sibyl1
No one, including MS, cares if you stick with PC. Why complain about not feeling forced to buy something you don't need?
If you're someone without the $$ and don't care for graphical improvements, stick to your old XBox. Similarly, if you don't care about top fidelity of your PC games, wait a bit longer to upgrade your graphics card.
In the mean time, enjoy the games you want.
Again, it's n...
It's not that hard to see their goals. Everything has focused on expansion of the ecosystem for 4+ years. We're finally seeing what that means in the new generation.
Just think of Halo Infinite, which is undeniably the biggest launch game MS could provide. It will be available to purchase on:
Xbox One S
Xbox One X
Series X
Lockhart
PC (and Play Anywhere)
You'll also be able to play it for ...
Like we continue to hear from devs, they'll scale down, not scale up.
Frank O'connor braved the waters over at Era and explained it:
"Most big publishers are building not just for cross generational hardware but for PC too - which makes scaling performance within those constraints but maxxing out at top spec, is already in the cards. And smaller indie devs who don't have the budget or concepts that need to "fill" those upper en...
Fanboys: "MS always abandons hardware. Sony supports its console after the generation ends."
MS: "We'll be supporting our old systems after the the generation ends."
Fanboys: "DOOMED!!"
It's difficult to find a group of consumers who will advocate for corporate interests over their own more so than console gamers.
I came in here thinking "cool, they just confirmed what we already knew, but at least they're being more specific." I guess I shouldn't have been surprised to see the same old kool aid drinkers crying about corporate interests.
This is good for gamers and devs. It's finally a step in a direction we s...
The loudest voices on forums, social media, etc. aren't usually reflective of the mass market.
By example, you would be hard pressed to find very many positive comments about EA around here. You're more likely to read about how people outright boycot their games. But how many EA games fill lists like this every year?
Success comes from addressing both groups. Sony was able to make a product that obviously meets the needs of the COD, FIFA, Fortnite...
We just got Sekiro. Nioh 2 is on the way.
On the other side we have older stuff like GoW, Hellblade, Banner Saga, etc.
Neither is "exactly fresh," but judging by the assumed launch next fall, an asian AC would come out within months of Nioh 2 and GoT. That wouldn't be smart.
Ragnorak will work out well imo. Looking forward to it.
Why can't you watch the live conferences on your own time too? The videos are as easy to watch as the Direct. You don't have to watch it live just like you don't have to watch the live stream from Directs.
The guy is just responding to fans on Twitter. Their E3 has typically included a large fan event before the show, too. Someone on Twitter threw him a nice easy softball and he took the opportunity to say something generic about fans.
