This misinformation needs to die. Yes, Sony did use the KS to gauge interest, but it wasn't their KS nor was the KS set in motion explicitly for that purpose. The KS was set in motion by Ys Net for the same reason every KS is: Funding.

The first thing I should say is that nowhere were we told this would be a "big" openworld game in the modern sense (as Shenmue is neither big nor open in the modern sense).

Shenmue isn't an open-world game in ...

I can't imagine who could replace him.

Iwata was an interesting man as he cut his teeth actually developing games instead of muscling into the industry with a background in packaged goods. That gave him perspective many CEOs in this industry simply don't have.

You should probably check out what they've shown off of the game. It's not a remaster, but closer to a Halo Anniversary-style complete overhaul/remake.

Admittedly Microsoft is at fault here for underselling the game and not making this point clear.

Oh wow. They actually went in and redid a lot of the modelling work as well. Really nice.

With REmaster selling so well I think it's only a matter of time before a new game in the classic style comes out (think about it: Low development cost + high profit). And I can't imagine how good a modern pre-rendered RE game could look.

If it is a prototype model it wouldn't be at all strange to feature Sony's branding. Moreover console manufacturers have allowed third-parties to manufacture consoles under their third-party branding before. Look at Hitachi's Sega Saturn for example, no Sega logos on it or the controller:

The story that it was fake was (to my knowledge) based on a mistranslation (or complete misunderstanding) of a Tweet sent out by the owner (that, IIRC, was written in French). It's really shocking that news sites would source their stories from a language they can't understand, and worse still that so many would follow suit in reposting the story without verifying the source for themselves.

My guess is they are still working on setting the framerate ceiling for 60 or unlocked, but don't want to be held to anything prematurely. At least not until they are sure they are able to hit their target.

Oculus Rift comes to mind. In fact if you look at the tech side (rather than the software side) there's been a lot of sucess stories.

We're paying to fund the development of the base (PC) game, whereas Sony's involvement is to port said base game to the PS4 and market it.

Sony isn't getting a cent of the Kickstarter money but they are putting resources on the line in their own way.

Sony isn't behind this game in the way you think and they aren't funding it the way you think either because it's not their IP, sucking the meaning out of funding the game significantly (...

Defintely getting closer to the original version. This slightly skinny/rough look matches her background better IMO.

Andrew House has already stated that their deal was to facilitate the PS4 version of the game (starting with giving stage tie for the KS during their E3 conference) in exchange for console exclusivity.

Whether that exclusivity will last or not is up in the air, but Sony have been quite frank about why the game is currently PS4 console exclusive and their hand in that.

I'm inclined to agree. For all we know Iron Galaxy might be a exceptionally talented studio that did a far better job in two months than many would have done with twice the time.

If you are brought in to port a PC game you don't turn down work just because the time frame is unreasonable (unless the publisher actually expects a working product). After all, your client is the publisher, not the consumer.

My guess is that WB didn't care about the sta...

Wait, the focus here is on the story not ending at 3 (we already knew that as it we were told it was a continuation) but not on the fact that we might get to play as Ren?! Really?!

3875d ago 0 agree1 disagreeView comment

I think most fans already knew this as the scope of Shenmue's story was laid out over a decade ago, with the entire story conceptualised from front to finish.

So yearly installments telling the next part of the story would be brilliant. Unlike other annualised games they wouldn't be struggling to make a story up each year as they stall for another years' sales without committing to a firm direction.

That's exactly what's happened to Assass...

Wow. The damage must go pretty damn deep if it is going to take that long to fix.

Edit: Think I'll wait for a story source in English first. A bit iffy on news coming out of nowhere.

In around 3 hours this story will somehow become a immovable evidence that Sony is funding Shenmue III in it's totality, have bought out Sega and are scrapping their PlayStation division to focus on pachinko machines.

"Statement says that Sony and Shibuya and helping fund production of the game. What does "production" cover, if not development?"

I'm looking into this. This question can be answered quite easily (in theory) by looking at what other kinds of support Sony's Third-Party Productions division has provided in the past.

For example, with Yakuza 5 Sony are (as I understand it) taking it upon themselves to translate the game.

Here's the thing though: the role of producers/production in the videogame industry varies from studio to studio. It's one of the anomalies of the industry.

Production doesn't necessarily have anything to do with paying for those things, but facilitating them (through contacts/introductions). Moreover we have no idea if Sony's production support is third-party production support of the kind they offer many smaller developers, or something that more directly to...

The problemed details are in the omission. I think that's what's bugging people.

The question we have to ask is ultimately this: When Sony is asked about their involvement with the project and they say they are involved in supporting the project in forms x, y and z is that a full admission (as the question demands)? Or are they omitting that they are also funding core development (exploiting a technicality in the wording)?

If it is the former (as I be...

I think ultimately this statement doesn't tell fans what we didn't already know because, unlike some sites/people, we actually know the facts.

But the issue over whether Sony is funding development of core game development or not is ultimately at the heart of all this. I've seen no evidence that is the case and comments to suggest otherwise. What Ys Net need to come out and say is that Sony isn't funding the development aspect of the game at all.
