What I find interesting is the possibility of Toshiba at least recouping some costs by selling off "Upscaling" DVD players that just happen to support the HD DVD standard. I'm sure someone's considering that as part of the company's exit strategy.

It's not over until it's over, and at the very least an excellent company won't be utterly devastated over the format war. I like Toshiba, I just don't think HD DVD had a chance compared to the technology potential and studi...

To clarify, it's 9.2M sold to end users in North America only, LTD. Not worldwide. Shipped worldwide is 17.7M.

You're wrong on the numbers.

At January's CES, Microsoft announced that it had shipped (sold-in, to retailers) 17.7 Million 360's worldwide. The current North American estimated user base (sold-thru to end users) is 9.2 Million. (again as of January). I'm not sure what the worldwide user base # is, but I think the numbers being thrown around are around ~15M. (It was 11.6M in Sept., but I can't find anything definitive for a current estimate.)

From GamesIndustry.biz:

"'In fiscal 2009 we'll also be offering additional episodic content for Grand Theft Auto IV on Xbox 360,' confirmed Ben Feder, CEO of Take-Two.

The publisher also reiterated the full game will be released next year, with two exclusive episodes due before the end of 2008."

Now the above was apparently corrected after that interview, basically saying there would be one episode before the end of fiscal '08, and one in fisca...

That quote was either entirely tongue-in-cheek on Ted Price's part, or manufactured by Kotaku to get a rise out of people.

I can't believe some of the comments here from people who are taking it seriously. Seriously. I mean, seriously. Are you that gullible?

Ass-covering: Then again, if they went balls-out, attack-all-religions, I'd buy two copies of R2 for the helluvit. Joking aside, I was kinda hoping for a battle-royale R2 finale in Vatican city.

That's the whole point. Universal did *not* say that. Google it. Half of the articles that suggest they did say it have updates saying "Well, apparently they didn't..."

There were misinterpretations of a Variety report that suggested Universal might drop exclusivity, but Universal's only official word as of yet has been "we will continue to support HD DVD").

Apparently they were under obligation to not say anything about any other format until ...

No, no, no. The blog post is a mis-read of the actual statements which have been posted to death here and elsewhere. The title is currently flat-out wrong. There have been no announcements or confirmations.

Magazine lead times are at least a month if not 2, so the blog post is based on old old old news. This should not have been approved.

Not that I'm disagreeing with the inherent suggestions, but seriously, this piece is not newsworthy. It's not even a rumour, ...

Read the article, and the scan linked within. This blogger is just making assumptions based on the news we've already heard in January.

This isn't an announcement from Universal about going Blu-ray. This story really shouldn't be approved.

I'm sure Universal will make the announcement soon, but this blog post is just jumping the gun.

It won't be free, nor will it be available for at least a year.

There's a difference between DLC and extra missions/episodes. Rockstar has suggested that both consoles will get DLC, but that there will be 2 exclusive missions/episodes for the 360.

By being vague, Rockstar is leaving open the slim possibility that there will be other episodes for the PS3 at some point, and that additional DLC in the form of clothes, cars, weapons, whatever might be offered for both s...

That's odd, because Robbie Bach admitted as much in the famous July conference call.

"[There are] a number of factors which can cause general hardware failures indicated by three red flashing lights on the console." And, "you should think of it as a Microsoft design issue"

Basically all (pre-Falcon??) 360s have the potential to die, not that they all actually will though. This is why they extended the warranty to 3 years for the RROD issue only....

Yeah, Edmund Hillary.

Sure, it was his last name, but still, to resort to juvenile insults over a name just because some punk brat's never heard of it is pretty sad. I think they're fanboys who just didn't like what he had to say.

I'm sure I could easily round up enough Staceys and Careys to set these kids straight.

Ah, the anonymity of the intarweb...

If you want one OLED key (spacebar), about $470. If you want every key, $1600 or so.

Go for it. ;)

The US does have super-fast lines, and Sprint (I think it's them...) offers a great all-inclusive fibre package, but there is nowhere near the penetration needed for DD to make any noticeable impact.

CORRECTION TO MY PREVIOUS POST:

I was out of date... the under 1mbps average was way out of date. As of last summer the average was ~2mbps, or 4, depending on which survey/report you look at. Sorry about that.

Still, it's far less than Canada's 7-8mbps....

They broke 8 Million LTD sold through (install base) as of early January, so either way things are definitely looking up.

For reference, the 360 had shipped (not sold through) 10 million units after their first year/13 months.

Comparatively speaking, things are pretty equal. PS3 sales need to increase steadily over the next few months to at least increase the pressure.

I'd much rather have a half-pint of good beer than a full pint of Coors or Bud.

It comes down to whether or not you prefer gulping or savouring. I prefer savouring, for the most part, and the steady flow of quality games and innovations has been more than satisfying.

It looks like the best is yet to come, so I'm really looking forward to getting enjoyably inebriated by all the quality games on tap for the next year or so.

(Oddly enough, I feel like a gr...

With the last reported average US download speed being sub 1mb/s (~800kbps), digital downloads don't have any chance of replacing disc-based media distributions anytime soon. Hopefully fibre connections will proliferate faster than expected, but until then digital downloads will be only be a casual alternative to purchasing full HD media.

You can't reasonably expect a 1080p (or high-quality 720p) distribution to come any where near the sales numbers of a disc-based release anyti...

Not to dispute or promote the article's assertion or anything, but seriously, this source material is utter bullcrap. Sure, it reiterates comments that've been posted elsewhere, but there are no attributions, sources, or any factual references whatsoever. (Hey! Phil H. Says The PS3 Wins the World! Source? Yeah, I have your source right here, pal!)

Who t.f. approves this garbage?

Yeah, maybe I agree (with qualifiactions) with the sentiment, but c'mon, I see no reaso...
