For me, it was BF1942 that turned me into a PC gamer; especially the Desert Combat Mod which a lot was adopted into BF2. However, BF2 was my favorite of the series and I put hundreds of hours into that game. Really looking forward to BF3, though; it is looking epic.
I like both and own both: a gaming PC and a PS3. Ya, that was my same thoughts on how to handle the differences between the PC and console versions. Just scale the maps down like BF2 did. However, this also makes me think that the consoles won't have jets either. If I remember correctly, the scaled down 32 player sized maps in BF2 didn't have jets. Oh well, just glad to see that DICE isn't gimping the PC version.
Shouldn't be a problem. BF2 required Win XP and DX9c with no support for Win 2000, yet sold like gangbusters. People will upgrade to Win 7 for this game, believe me. I've already upgraded my PC last year to play BFBC2 maxed out and ready for BF3.
Good point MysticStrummer. Talking about mindless run and gun, have you seen the latest COD parody out? It's called "Duty Calls" and it encapsulates the problems with the COD franchise perfectly.

"Battlefield has always been the second best FPS"? According to who? Console gamers? COD is an over-milked, over-hyped, arcade FPS that has been the same game for the last 4 entries. I'm just glad to see DICE not forget the PC players (who got them where they are) and put extra effort into our version. Good to see they are not "consolizing" and gimping it like COD has become: the PC versions of the latest COD games have been crap. BF3 is going to be epic!

@negroguy, get the PC version if your rig can handle it for it will the best version: 64 players vs 24 for the consoles plus lots of other extra goodies that could only be handled by PC hardware. I'm glad to see DICE put extra effort into the PC version and not have it gimped to the console level (like the COD series has become).
@AntoineDcoolette, I believe both console versions of BF3 will be at 24 players and PC is at 64. If you care about player counts, you really should get the game for the PC which it was meant for (this is the spiritual successor to BF2). Frankly, I'm just glad to see DICE put extra effort into the PC version and not have it gimped because of the consoles (like the COD games).
@Pandamobile, you got that right. 64 players on PC and the return of jets plus the Frostbite 2.0 destruction and graphics upgrade. BF3 is going to be epic.
What a dumb article. How is the console that is being used for more than just games equal to being a paperweight? How is versatility a bad thing? That's like calling my computer a paperweight because I do other things than just gaming on it. Doesn't that just mean that you're spending more time on it? @Snatcher, that's why I own a PC and a PS3....what I believe is the best combo in gaming. PC for the FPS and RTS games plus the PS3 for their excellent lineup of exclusives (and 2011 looks great for both). 360 and Wii are good consoles, but I won't insult them or their users just because they didn't appeal to me.
@Shackdaddy836, I hope you are right because I was looking forward to this game. My true salvation, though, will be BF3 because I have a good feeling that the game is going to be truly epic. Hopefully, it'll be a BFBC2/BF2 combo: BF2 sized maps with 64 players, more classes and plenty of vehicles (including jets) plus BFBC2 style destruction.
I was ready to get this game until I read today that it will only have 6v6 MP. I don't know if I'm going to buy it now with all the other shooters coming out this year, most which will have way more than 12 players. Killing and being killed by the same people over and over can get boring real fast. I'm really looking forward to BF3 and some really intense MP action.
I, too, was going to get this game for PC, but I just read that it only has 6v6 players in MP and now I'm really questioning if I should get it. 12 players in a modern shooter? And I thought Black Ops was a joke at 18 players.
