That's what I do for every game that has single and multi, unless the single is just training mode for online.

Yeah - it all depends on how the publisher feels about it. Generally it's probably in their best interest not to make a big deal about it if it's just people playing legit copies early, but they probably need to go after the piracy.
I know they have said they are manufacturing Wiis at an unprecedented rate, like 1.2 million a month, and they still can't meet demand. But it really does seem like they are using supply constraint to keep demand from waning in the face of the lack of quality titles.
I imagine that they don't want to spend a lot of capital ramping up production only to see demand decrease as this would likely have a negative affect on their bottom line. As things stand now they are making a kill...

Absolutely - every time there's a demo that totally sucks I think "thanks for saving me money," while wondering if they really thought that letting me see how lame their game is would make me go buy it.

At this point I don't think it would be all that crazy to assume that Microsoft doesn't even know, at this point, what the DLC will really truly be.
Personally, I think if it was really going to be as big as San Andreas was to GTAIII there would be no freaking way they would make it exclusive.

You are correct. If you have a 1080 native set it will ONLY display 1080 vertical lines of resolution, ever. Period.
There's is no reason to do this - all it will really do is inconvenience you when you play certain games. There's a reason they want you to check the boxes for all resolutions you screen supports - it's so you don't have to reset your video settings all the time.
