hah - i actually do wear my 3d glasses and my x41s at the same time. one thing that helps is that my tv is passive 3D so the glasses are the same type you wear in a movie theater - i haven't tried them but i've heard the active-shutter glasses are heavy and less comfortable.
also - i can't imagine adding 3D to a game could ever effect its normal 2D mode. why would it? the 3D version might run and a reduced resolution and/or with less fps but that doesn't effe...
i think you're wrong: 3D support has definitely been a factor in the purchase of more than one game (most recently halo: anniversary and de blob 2). if, as you say, your glasses are still in the box, you might want to take them out and give it a try - it's actually pretty awesome. you could say you've 'been there done that' about HD gaming but the argument would be just as silly.
i can't understand why anyone who's upgrading their tv now wouldn't just go ahead and buy one that supports 3D. the price difference between sets that support it and ones that don't is negligible. vizio's line of 3d tvs (which use the same screens as LGs) are under $1000 dollars. the next gen is going to be all about 3D i can promise you - might as well spend the money now instead of having to buy a new set next year.
i dont think a first party nintendo game has every used a 3rd party engine, i cant imagine they'd start now.
