This topic is the hotly contested and debated subject of our time and not just regarding games, but also all forms of digital media.

Piracy is not the same as stealing and can't be by virtue of its nature, for one very specific reason.

You are not stealing a physical copy of something that costs a definable amount of money to produce per unit. You are in fact making a copy of something on your own dime, and the original remains untouched. Whether it was cop...

Cue the shrill shrieks of, "Think if the children!"

How about creating a study on why people are so easily influenced by a hand full of studies that ultimately have contradictory results? Sounds fantastic.

Hey, guess what? I did a study on what came out of me the last time I went to the bathroom and it has some oddly compelling results.

Let's be study buddies.

I think Jon St. John is a kick ass name... I don't know why, but it's well.. almost, porn-like or action star sounding.

If what the article says is true, than their deal was for Bethesda to make 3 games and associated DLC... after that, Interplay would get the franchise back and of course, in the meantime, still have the ability and right to make an MMO. I actually didn't know that, I had originally thought Interplay had sold the IP to Bethesda in perpetuity... that changes things.

Listen, I like Bethesda's games and I think Todd Howard is a true game guy, who likes to play and make ...

I don't agree at all. I think the concept of 'post-apocalyptic' is intriguing. Besides, just like cgoodno said below, it won't be going anywhere.

I don't know what this means for the future of the franchise, but things will play out, like they always do and in the end, it will be about the money.

I think they will continue to do well, as they have been. The hack will be just a ripple in their bigger picture. Piracy is a part of the bigger picture, but it's not the end brush stroke. Some people make it seem like piracy has not been around for decades and it has. People pirated on BBS and cassette tapes 20 and 30 years ago for crying out loud.

The growth of the industry evens out the losses realized by such things.

Sony will continue to be an ...

Sweet merciful Lord. Yes. That is all that can be said... simply, yes.

This takes me back to the days of old when computers were powered by water mills and Saved by The Bell reruns were not just confined to Nick at Night. Holy Shit, it's like an old friend coming back from the dead. I was 15 when DN3D came out ... Come get some.

In fact, I feel it is superior to the Wii Metroid
game(s). Which is quite perplexing.

There are just too many people that don't understand the concept of repercussions. I could go on and on and on... and it would not matter. Some of you could listen to debates by much more intelligent people than me who lay out systematically and completely how this could hinder and hurt us all 10-20-50 years from now. I could dredge up court case documents and legal treaties and politically/economically/socia lly philosophical papers written about these very subjects. I could shout at the...

Let's say that one day, you decide to buy a new computer and let's say that that computer has parts from all different manufacturers. Sure, it might have a HP Shell, but the RAM is from one company and the CPU is from another, ect. (all of them have a deal with HP)

Now, let's say you have an OS installed on the computer, which is really what makes it all work together to do things you want it to do and you bought it for in the first place.

Now...

@Non_sequitur - I agree. It's something I've actually gotten into arguments with my father over.

This is great and for all the haters of Starcraft, PC, gaming and apparently family fun, go to hell.

See the thing is, it's all well and good that a company wants to protect itself, its investments and profit potential, but there are larger implications that go BEYOND gaming. This cuts right to the heart of consumer rights and property rights and/or ownership.

I realize that everybody wants gaming to thrive and grow and not go away, but we as a people should have bigger concerns than that. We need to start paying attention to what this shit really means.

I would like to see them create their next console with the ability to be upgraded. You could create the hardware in a modular fashion. In fact, that could even help fight (but honestly probably not end) piracy. When a new peice of hardware comes out to upgrade a processor or whatever, you could include additional security features at the same time.

Think about it, would you like to spend $600+ dollars for a new console every generation or just upgrade a part of it for may...

This is highly unlikely, as it would greatly reduce the functionality of the device and what we've come to expect out of home electronics devices. Also, you don't need a USB port to 'jailbreak'. Any doorway, including any kind of controller port - even if it were wireless, could potentially do it.

@MysticStrummer - Completely reasonable and I agree. It should be an option.

Well, they could eliminate the install and signifigantly reduce loading times if they started going back to their solid state roots. I doubt it will go that route, though. Once optical drives start really showing their age, it will probably be digital downloading from then on or maybe cloud based. The only thing about that is, eventually they could figure out ways to hack the client side hardware that you use to interface with the programs on the server side. Yes, it's harder, but I doubt...
