The simple reason why Windows 7 will be adopted is that people will need more than 3GB of RAM, and XP 32bit doesn't support more. In two years, 4GB RAM for gaming rigs will be standard, so Gamers will be FORCED to run Windows 7 (or Vista). XP 64bit just doesn't work.
Actually, it will be the opposite. They will call Windows 7 "XP SE", and this alone will propel it into every business.
There are hundreds of games where you don't kill the bad guys (GTA series, Kane and Lynch, Hitman, etc.). Stop trying to hide behind that. Fact is: virtual murder is tolerated, virtual rape not. Is this ok? Maybe, I don't know. But really, I don't se people playing rape games to actually go out and rape real women afterwards...I don't see why people should be unaffected by virtual killing, but not by virtual raping. Care to explain?
If I've counted right, you're basically saying that Fallout 2 is 100'000 times better than Fallout 1, which is wrong. Both are orders of magnitude better than Oblivion, but 2 is only maybe 1 order of magnitude better than 1...
Microsoft is a company, not software.
Technological progress always means people lose jobs. But usually, new jobs are created along the way, so...
What kind of weapons, though? Maybe a flamethrower would fit in, and an M3 grenade launcher, but that's about it, I think...
Ignorance is bliss, eh? Way to go, buddy!
Playing shooter games DOES have an effect on the psyche that makes it easier to harm/kill people. It helps to think of people as abstract targets, thus lowering empathy for possible victims. This effect is well known and even put to use in the form of military training simulators.
BUT gaming certainly doesn't wake the urge to kill. Also, the above-mentioned effect is pretty weak and can easily be countered by normal social interaction. THIS is the problem, that some people are to...
Both left and right hate computer/video games in my country. It's because my country is dominated by conservatives (yes, even the lefties are conservative in my country)...they don't understand gaming and even fear it, and would do everything to make it go away. This link to crimes just tries to further this cause.
Isn't it funny how 50+ years old people talk about gaming experiences that are completely impossible (shooting innocent bystanders, women and children, in Counterstrik...
So? Which of the games I listed is not a FPS? You play from a first person perspective and shoot in all of them. Okay, there might be some genre blends in there, like System Shock 2 or Deus Ex, but they are still more fps than anything else, if you ask me.
I was very tempted to register multiple accounts just to disagree with you some more ;). Come on, why so serious, dude?
Some points I disagree with you:
- HL > HL2
- either put Wolf3d OR Doom (as origin of FPS), but not both
- Halo is not top10 material (only noteworthy part of it is the flood)
- Duke3d may be top10, but not first
- same for goldeneye...it provided massive splitscreen fun, but that alone doesn't make top3
- call of duty 4 is...
F.E.A.R. is a decent game, but not top10 material. There are tons of better games, like System Shock 2, Deus Ex, Half Life, Aliens vs. Predator, Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight, No one lives forever, Call of Juarez, Tron 2.0, Chronicles of Riddick, Unreal Tournament, etc.
It's actually the other way around, but yeah, I hope (and expect it even) it will be great.
Haha, Daikatana. I've paid 10 bucks for that crap, and even played it through (yeah, I'm stubborn). The leveldesign in the greek and medieval ages and some weapons weren't half bad, but the rest of the game was ridiculous.
Also, this list already fails with F.E.A.R. on it. It's a good game, but certainly not top10 material. I also bet that the list won't include No one lives forever, Aliens versus Predator or Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight, because the author is either too young, or ...
It's good that you put story and gameplay over graphics, but actually, gameplay is even more important than story. If the game plays like crap, but has a good story, it's still a crap game. A bad story can be forgiven, if the game plays well.
Also, it's funny how random people pop in and say stuff like "graphics are super important, yaddayaddayadda". Graphics ARE important, but the article actually deals with a more subtle matter: art style versus realism. In my opinion...
Then forget commercial games. They simply don't run on other platforms than windows, ATM. Sad, but true.
It's funny, but don't forget that you can't simply "buy" open-source software. If they really bought Mozilla, forks of firefox would soon appear.
Is archiving. What's more comfortable, an external 1TB drive with 30 - 50 rips on it, or a shelf full of discs?
Maybe your problem is the view angle. HL2 and other games have it at 75°, which induces sickness/headache in a lot of people. Some games (like HL2) let you set the angle yourself, and for some of my friends, the sickness disappears if they set it at 90°. Thankfully, I am not stronlgy affected by this, but HL2 also made me uneasy, somehow...it wasn't as pleasant an experience as it should have been, and I guess this could be why.
