I guess you missed the entire first hour of Microsoft's conference, featuring Modern Warfare 3, Mass Effect 3, Gears of War 3, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, Halo 4, Forza Motorsport 4, Tomb Raider, Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary among others.
It was pretty close for me between Microsoft and Sony, but I think Microsoft just edged Sony out.
Microsoft had the largest lineup of core games (ME3, MW3, Gears 3, Halo 4, Forza 4, Ryse, GR: Future Soldier, Fable, Halo: CE Remake, Tomb Raider, etc.), they showed some very interesting new features for Xbox LIVE (YouTube, Bing, Live TV), and they gave core gamers more reason to buy Kinect (hardcore games, integration into ME3, GR:FS, EA Sports, all future Tom Clancy games). "Relying on Kinect as the big killer"? What do you mean by that? They had more core games at their conference than Sony did. Those were what really made the show for me; ME3, Gears 3, Forza 4, MW3, Tomb Raider, Halo 4, Ryse, GR:Future Soldier, and so on...
Kinect is a killer in itself though. It is the sole reason the 360 is outselling its competitors so far in 2011.
It's pretty clear that the next Xbox console is not coming for a very long time. Kinect has been a phenomenal success and has breathed new life into the console. They are just getting started bringing a new audience to the Xbox 360 and turning it into more than just a gaming console - an entertainment hub. Right now they have more sales momentum than any other console, so they're in no hurry to release a new system. It wouldn't make any sense to, either. You could sooner see a PS4...
Too bad it leaked right before the Microsoft conference after being kept under wraps for that long. And on the Xbox website, to top it all off.
I preferred Microsoft's conference simply because they showcased more core games.

I have a feeling if Microsoft did this same thing with one of their games, people would call them "desperate", and say they knew the game wouldn't sell well so they're giving the first one away free hoping for new customers.

Looks pretty cool to me and I'm a hardcore gamer. This will probably sell millions. Just imagine casuals seeing this on TV. Kinect sales are going to rocket up again.
Announcements to slow down the PS3's momentum? The 360 has had the most momentum of any console going into 2011. They have doubled their previous year's sales for by far the highest year over year sales increase of any console. The 360 is the best-selling console so far in 2011 with 2.7 million units versus 2.1 million units for the PS3, according to Microsoft and Sony's financial reports.

Sony isn't catching up anymore, though. Did you see Microsoft and Sony's financial reports for Q1 2011? Microsoft shipped 2.7 million 360s and Sony shipped 2.1 million PS3s.

And Nintendo's E3 2008 was a disaster and they completely obliterated the 360 and PS3 in sales that year. The 360 is already outselling its competitors so far in 2011 according to Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo's financial reports. Just wait until all this new Kinect and Xbox LIVE (YouTube, Live TV, etc.) kicks in. Sales are going to skyrocket, for better or worse.
