People pirate games for 2 main reasons.
1. their lazy
2. they're often don't see the value in purchasing it.
Steam seems to be doing an effective job of making it easy to get games, and with all of the deals on games they provide it's selling those games a price people see reasonable. I'd say that steam is actually helping to curve piracy quite a bit.
You're talking about Valve, the valve, the company who's games have won more game of the year awards then anyone else?
if it were a console only good for multiplatform games, this year alone I've already played:

race pro
star ocean
halo wars
and there was also velvet assassin, ninja blade. And still to come we have forza 3, splintercell conviction, l4d2, halo odst, etc.
I mean, the 360 is good for exclusives as well. And the ps3 is also good for multiplatform gaming.
But you've been doing an absolutely horrible job with your bias. I'm honeslty not sure how you've been decided to be a mod here on the site.

I can understand this idea as a way to replace subscription or transaction payment models. You wear x clothing you get to play for free, want to look unique you have to pay. But other than that it seems like an attempt to force even more adverts into our already full world.

Wasn't is sony that said 10 million people would buy the ps3 just on the playstation brand alone, even if it didn't have any games? I think you've pointed out the wrong company.

When I see games like splintercell conviction, and forza 3 and alanwake I don't see where the 360 is falling behind. It looks right on par with what the ps3 is producing. And for a console that supposed to be much more powerful then the 360 why hasn't the multiplatform games looked any better like they did on the original xbox compared to the ps2.

Microsoft is making some changes to the direct X api in accordance to the release of DX11 and windows 7. The X-engine is more then just a set of tools.
Everybody has their own favorite halo.
I think that the original had such a great reputation because of how well they kept everything under wraps, like the flood. And because there was no other game like it out there, no one new what to expect from it. The mystery of halo, really helped make the original so amazing.
I also think that's why a lot of the people that try halo for the first time recently just don't understand why the story, and the game is so good.
That's understandable, but my point is that even if they don't develop a good game, they can still develop great technology that will keep their name on the books.
And lets not forget they have developed some decent games in the last decade, like doom 3.
I mean, look at criteron, before burnout did you know who they were? Did you know they developed the most widely used videgame engine last generation. The engine which powered games like GTA3/VC/SA?
But I was severely disappointed with flower.
While I loved the art, and relaxation qualities of the game The actual gameplay imo felt dated, like it was just Snake 3d.
Hopefully they develop a new game that's more reminiscent of fl0w then fl0wer.
That would pretty much kill it's sales completely.

When Gabe newell left iD and started up valve it was thanks to the quake engine which spawned source-gold and even the current sorce engine, as well as all the great games those engines had created.
Without quake 3, cod4 would look like a completely different game from the way it does today considering it's based of the engine.
