there are approximately 1 million HD-DVD owners out there and quite a few of them are probably thinking about going combo player at this point, just waiting for the price to drop. The rest are very likely waiting for BR 1.1 or 2.0 player below $200.00, so the combo market will thrive for the next year or so very likely.

as simply put as possible, the appearance of the movie has nothing to do with the format and everything to do with the authoring. Now, if he didn't have enough space on one disc or another that may be something else altogether but he does come across as though he's a bit clueless at the moment. It's also disappointing to see someone like this get so petty a format he has very little to do with.

if this is true, thankfully we may finally see an end to the format war.

I hope they are too. They need to pick a side and end this thing. Honestly, I think there are a lot of things to consider besides just "who is winning ATM." Consider that PS3 makes up 93% of all blu ray players out there. Now consider that the attache rate for the average blu-ray player owner is .6. That means that on average, each blu ray player owner doesn't even own a full movie. The average attache rate for an HD-DVD owner is *SIX* movies.
Consider also that althoug...

yes because spending extra money when you dont need to is pretty brilliant.

7 of the 10 movies sold over thanksgiving were blu-ray? WOW this hi-def battle is HEATING UP!!!!

Ya, I know what it really says, but this whole minute by minute reporting of this stupid battle that will not seem to end is getting damned old. Especially when blu-ray vs HD-DVD always ends up turning into some fanboy monkey turd slinging fight. At this point, even though I'd prefer HD-DVD I'd rather just see one format come out on top so this will finally end.

I completely agree that casual gamers can put the wii down just as quickly as they picked it up. Speaking from my own personal experience though, with all the wii gamers I know - none of them are my grandparents, or some clueless dorks who have only bowled once and then put it down. They are gamers just like me; excited for more new content and still buying the crappy games out now.

I do not disagree: all signs seem to point to "fad" in my mind. After how many mi...

Ok, before the wii launched, everyone laughed. Then it sold out everywhere and everyone still kept laughing. Its a year later, they've outsold both "next gen contenders" and its still "a fad". Now, I'm not particularly impressed with the unit, I don't own one, not sure I want to. But to call it a joke still... Well, its the best selling joke of all time if that's really whats up.

William, I can't offer you proof that it's helping. I will say however that I don't believe it's hurting. These are spare CPU cycles and stanford seems to think they can be put to use. Research continues until it ends, so in the case of F@H, it can and may go on forever, but thats also the point of research (IMO).

They *can't* link 10,000 ps3's together, they don't have the money. That is the whole point of distributed processing programs such as seti and folding to the be...

I don't do this often but I'm making a very general statement here:

I'm betting that less than 1% of all ps3 owners bought their ps3 for F@H. So within that context I don't think it will help sales at all. It is pretty incredible to see how much computing power the thing has though.

To proclaim that you are loyal to some major corporate entity is something to be proud of? Be proud then I guess. I will buy a ps3 because I like games. Not because I'm "loyal," thats not loyal thats being a consumer tool. Congrats. I'll "stay loyal to myself" by thinking for myself and not confusing a statement made to compliment ps3 owners with more fanboy 360 vs ps3 garbage. Pssh.

On to the actual statement itself: yes. Ps3 owners have done a HUGE s...

The same gamers who causally picked it up will casually put it down. Its a great console, but targeting the "casual gamer crowd" also has it's risks. Either way, I'm not a Nintendo hater, I love the competition they are injecting into the market and hope they keep it up.

Yes, all dvd are region coded. *NONE* of the HD-DVD's are though, and quite a few BD's aren't either.

Flamebait.

6702d ago 0 agree0 disagreeView comment

That is somewhat true, region coding can be can not only be determined by the group authoring the DVD, its also must be included in the technical specifications for that format. So put simply, its not just a decision made by the group authoring the dvd, its made by the hd-dvd or blu-ray governing bodies respectively as to whether or not their formats will carry that techical specification. *It would appear* that attempts to enforce region coding on HD-DVD have been stalled out and will not ...

I agree that sonys psone and the ps2 have long lives ahead of them. Comparing the old xbox, that never ever made a dime in its day, to the psone and the ps2 is the big mistake. Typically, when a product comes along to replace an older one, the older one goes away unless market demand keeps it alive. Microsoft did not have that demand with the xbox.

Man, I hope to buy a ps3 down the road and this game really *looked* like a must have. Sony must be pissed at factor 5. I mean, wasn't this game supposed to be a lunch title initially? It really appeared promising. I wonder how sales will be. Reviews don't necessarily reflect how it'll do on the market all the time... They certainly don't help in this case either though.

6715d ago 1 agree0 disagreeView comment

I don't see how giving your console more functionality is a bad thing. I know plenty of people who bought the ps3 *JUST* for the blu ray player, Sony hoped and planned on consumers viewing it as both a console and a player. It is a great deal, regardless of how you look at it.

6717d ago 1 agree0 disagreeView comment

Sony isn't trying to just make a game console. They are trying to push a whole new format for movies as well. If it takes off, its really not a bad idea. If we are going back to the old "ps3 doesn't need Blu-Ray" argument, thats a whole other can of worms that I am steering clear of.

I don't think that the paramount deal helped, but it's nice to see to a similar deal as to what HD-DVD is doing.

Furthermore, I don't agree with what was said about sony not wanting to market this as a Blu-Ray player. From the very start Sony suggested this was going to be a "single device for your living room." The only way they can, and should be able to justify selling a console for that much is with its BR capabilities. So, I'm don't agree with the statement ...
