If they can pork up a story about a videogame so easily, what does it say about the news we get on a daily basis? Not that I've ever considered Fox to be a credible news source but it is a little food for thought.

Not trying to start an argument here: I was under the impression that the attach rate for BR owners (including ps3) was .6 - the attach rate for HD-DVD was 6. Disregarding the fact that BR is still outselling HD-DVD, I thought these numbers themselves were *not* smoke and mirrors. Care to elaborate?

I get HD .wmv's @720p with dd5.1 audio = 8.4 gb. It's not that small at all, but it certainly isn't 17GB. The point of the HD downloadable content is that it is compressed so efficiently you can't tell the difference between it and your 17GB uncompressed counterparts. Now, whether it does or not is something else altogether, but I'm just addressing your statement.

except this info is no longer accurate. BR and HD-DVD both use the vc-1 and MPEG 4 codecs. He's prattling on about mpeg2 which is straight up old news.

Furthermore he may be right about a 1.3 mbps, but HD downloads have far surpassed this bitstream. OLD & NOT APPLICABLE.

Please people check your damned dates before posting "news." This guy is making updates to his article dated 06-2007. Perhaps reading more than just the headline will actually help people learn something.

the 360 is capable of nearly all that the ps3 is in terms of a home theater media streaming client. True, there is no native divx but since the content is being streamed, its not something that should prevent someone from trying with the xbox. I personally just hooked up a 750 gb mybook to my 360 and use it to store all the movies I want to watch and it works quite well. You are right about the dual boot, I simply don't many ps3 users who have taken advantage of it. It was my understandin...

there isn't a single new piece of info in here. These guys just barely pick up the story?

RRoD shouldn't have happened. If people would read the damned article, you can tell he's not saying they offer the most reliable console ever. This headline is taken out of context with the interest of flamebait. And either way, *I think Bill may be a lil' biased* so who cares if he heaps praise on to the 360, its expected.

WRONG

none of the software MS has been releasing for the XBOX 360 has been hd-dvd. Hence the add-on for movies only.

completely agree with you there man: this was NOT MS's fight. I've been trying to remind the sony fanboys they need to direct their rage at Toshiba and NOT MS, but not many listening there. I find it interesting that most people sided with BR out of their dislike for MS even though MS was kind of just placing their vote and then continuing on with business as usual. Their marketplace has been killing most other download services out there and they are making money hand over fist off it.

Maddens raiders: I'll try to answer your question, please make of it what you will.

This war was far from undecided up until about a week or so ago.

93% of all BR players on the market were ps3's, well over 50% of all ps3 owners didn't even know it played BR. The average attach rate (movies owned by ps3 owners) was .6 meaning most BR owners don't even own more than the free movie that came with it. The average HD-DVD owner owned 6 movies. I've been spitting t...

uhhh
I don't even know of many places that would still allow a return. What's it been, a month and a half now?

6583d ago 0 agree0 disagreeView comment

I'm not sure about that. I think MS could have done *much more* to help the standard. For example if they were really backing this thing 100% they would have put an HD-DVD drive in the xbox much more quickly. They would have also thrown a lot more money at the studios to go exclusive. MS authored the vc-1 codec and they surely backed HD-DVD, but I don't think they are going to rock this thing till the wheels fall off or anything. I really hope they offer a combo add-on before the year is...

The "HD Download agenda" isn't a Microsoft monopoly man. *LOTS* of people stand to benefit and make money with downloads. Just like music, most people bought music and now download it - movies will follow suit just a little more slowly. Further more there's nothing wrong with MS casting two bets, one for HD-DVD while continuing to offer the marketplace downloads. One is actually wildly successful while the other... well...

we will see how serious universal is after their contract expires at the end of the month. Universal can't really confirm or deny anything up until then. My guess is that they will, and should jump ship.

No arguments here, the PS3 *IS* the best BR player you can buy because its upgradeable (another gripe I have with BR is the lack of standards and how it hurts the consumer so I will personally buy a PS3.

Now that the format war may be over though, many others will jump in and make competitively priced BR players at a much lower price point than the ps3, and just like with DVD, their feature sets will continue to grow as the price lowers. You are 100% correct on nearly all fron...

sony won the format war by putting more players out there in the market. They sold more discs by volume yes, but the average ps3 owner owns .6 movies. The average HD-DVD owner owned six movies per player. This suggests to me that most ps3 owners weren't actually too interested in owning more than the free movie they got. The small fraction of ps3 owners who did go out and buy movies happened to amount to more than the HD-DVD community in sheer volume though - and they outsold HD-DVD EVERY W...

But that doesn't mean there aren't millions of already purchased discs that many people still want to enjoy. I hear there is even a possibility that a BR laser can potentially play both formats. That would be aces.

Holy cow some actual reasoning here and not just fanboy format dribble! You get a bubble.

Who would buy a player? People not interested in a console, thats who. There are LOTS of movie loving adults who don't need LAIR, RFOM, or anything else. Why buy a console for $400, when most players will end up being much less? I think the ps3 is a great console/player but its not for everyone.

Most everyone I know bought a regular DVD player, NOT a ps2 to watch movies on it.
