Im thinking the same thing! Ive already got the Xbox 360 HD-DVD add on (because it works with my PC, so I can use it with Windows Media Center and the future HD-DVD data discs...)
But man, that is a great deal. Im thinking for the price, I might pick them up as Xmass gifts for my family (but, they *also* have Xbox 360s, so I recommended they get the add-on (for the same reasons I did)).

The two machines are roughly the same in hardware "power". But, as you said, the difference shines through in the development environments. There, one firm's offering rises above the other.
You can't win them all. R&C may be a fine game, but its not a master-work. Its a passable game. Its going to end up 8.5-7 on metacritic. Somewhere just above Resistence, but still the best PS3 exclusive title to date.
What you mean to say is GTA is going to crush MGS, and if Konami releases it at the same time, it is going to get washed away.

Hm, my hardware is stable as hell. And all the machines have had their early heat issues covered via warranty. No worries. New machines have the heat issues fixed.

The HDMI output is nice. Further, you prefer a nice quiet Xbox 360 in the entertainment center as opposed to a PC.
You can use the IR remote or the wireless controller to operate the Xbox 360 as opposed to a wireless keyboard / mouse or add-on remote.
Consider the Xbox 360 a computer designed for what you do with your TV... and the things you wish you could do with your TV (LIVE Messenger, Video Conference etc).
A small number of codecs? No.

The only codec of note that is missing is DivX, and that is what TVersity or a transcoder is for.

I do this (HD movies via USB external drive) and it is NTFS. Why bother with the mac formatting?

They pulled this same nonsense with UMD in the PSP. And, if the PSP had played standard DVDs, the world would be a different place. UMD is a dead media format.
BTW, Sony's PS division lost $847 Million in Q2 2007. One quarter, nearly a Billion Dollars lost.
