Yeah, it still is. You may be locked out of online portions of your game on a console, but there's no way the publishers or devs can physically come to your house and take the disc away from you.
With discs, you can still play at least some of the game. With digital distribution, you wont be able to play any of it.
Why Kingdoms of Amalur? Got this game recently for $15 bucks and have been playing it for about 2 weeks and have been having a lot of fun with it.
It's not perfect and has a few problems, but for the most part, it's a pretty damned good game.

I disagree. The majority of game purchasers do not do any research into the game prior to release, most just buy the game on name alone. Even if they reverted back to the original style of their game, I'm betting it wouldn't make that much of a difference.

Gears 3 improved upon everything from its predecessors, just like Uncharted 3 did. Neither game had absolutely huge changes from the previous entries in their respective franchises, but they did take everything from the previous games and improved upon them in every single aspect.
Games of a different genre cannot be compared, but games of the same franchise can, so long as the franchise doesn't have a huge overhaul (like going from 3rd person action game to first person shooter or something like that).

I disagreed with you because borderlands was still really good offline. Larger devs might look at EAs origin and make their own unwanted but necessary distribution service.
