No forward compat for PS4 controllers : confirmed. That effectively hikes the price for a PS5 owner who wants more than one controller by at least $60.
I'm surprised at this "use the back" thing that failed horribly with the Vita. It's basically just an excuse to force new controllers down our throats, as I see it. No game will use it, outside of Sony 1st party titles, just like the PS4 controller speaker.
This is what happens when you let random internet people call themselves "journalist".
Power leaps, from gen-to-gen:
PS1 -> PS2 :
CPU 10x
GPU 20x (or more, as the PS1 didn't have a GPU, it just had some extra CPU instructions to help the CPU do rendering)
PS2 -> PS3 :
CPU: 10-50x (depending on Cell SPU usage)
GPU: about 30x
PS3 -> PS4 :
CPU: 0.5x (or less, again depending on SPU usage)
GPU: 7x
PS4 -> PS4 Pro :
CPU: 1.2x
Um. You're wrong. If you own the disc, and the title has been verified through the emulator, it works. Every game would need some tweaks, likely, so if that hasn't been done, then the emulator likely won't id it as BC.
The series X exactly aligns with Microsoft's strategy of unifying the PC and console space, and leveraging Microsoft's command of the PC market to bring far greater value to consumers and games publishers.
I think they've knocked the ball outta the park this time, if only they can sell it to consumers -- the right price, the right marketing. Sony's closed ecosystem is like Apple's -- overpriced and underpowered. Sony should count their lucky stars that...
I actually HOPE Sony charges for BC, because it will make me laugh at all the knuckleheads who think that's okay.
I own all the old consoles anyway, and buy everything but exclusives on Xbox, now, because you know.. I prefer the best hardware. They are never gonna BC the PS3, so I don't really care all that much, I guess -- I made a good choice when I switched favorite console manufacturer, it seems.
It is a shame that Sony will never return to i...
Yet another thing to plug into the livingroom wall socket, and set up in the entertainment center. Just what I needed!
It's nice not having to keep the old console hooked up somewhere, so I can play whatever game I wish without a bunch of old consoles in my livingroom...
I bet you wish you had to buy a new TV everytime a new video format came out... You have your HD TV for 720p stuff, your Full HD TV for 1080p, your UHD TV for 4k stuff, and of course you keep your ole SD TV around for 480p.
Um.. what? I own about 30 PS1 digital games on the PS Store, and I can't play ANY of them on PS4.
Why should I have to pay a subscription fee (PS Now) again, when I already purchased a license? OH YEAH, Sony wants me to pay again, because why not? And, in truth, PS Now does NOT support PS1 titles, just fyi.
No thanks. I'll go with "pay once", from now on. Sony already burned me with that BS.
Over 50% of users are interested in BC as a feature, according to Microsoft. Given that there are 100M PS4s, I can imagine that, like with the Nintendo DS (sold over 100M, btw), there would be a big publisher advantage to making games targeted towards the "lesser" hardware, if the new hardware is fully BC, for the first couple years.
Don't take my word for it. Go look up "Nintendo DS", and enjoy the read.
There will be software BC... for a price.
Not hardware though. LOL if anyone thinks they can use their PS4 controller on PS5, without some expensive adapter.
Sony just needs to sell a lower performance PS5 at the same, or higher price, and lock down BC with a paywall, all while forcing people to buy controllers again, etc.
So yeah... I guess Xbox can win, since Sony is going to rob us in basically all those ways.
N4G is covered in Xbox, and the only Sony story on the front page right now is "Sony needs another Uncharted".
I'd say the impression was definitely good, and that it served its purpose -- get people to question their PS4 purchase this holiday, especially when the Xbox One S is cheaper, the Xbox One X is as cheap, or cheaper than, the PS4 Pro, and will offer full forwards compatibility. Sony is still keeping quiet... which tells me that if you buy a PS4, you ...
Wow. Xperia? Serious?
Sony Fanboy to the end.
$600 is worth it. That's like a $500 console in 2006, and a $400 console in 1997. Not a problem. I am down.
After investing millions, publishers get tired of "give us more money and time", so eventually the publisher says "finish it, ship it, we'll take what money we can back, because we no longer believe you're a good investment".
Business, plain and simple. The money-men do NOT care about the quality of the game, if it only sells to a limited number of people. Rather than blaming them, though, the modern entitled gamer really needs to blame themsel...
Sony buying Insomniac has nothing to do with some sort of exclusives competition-war that is heating up, or whatever. It's more like they were down a man, on the roster. They just need a replacement for the several studios they laid off at the beginning of the gen, when they were in bad financial shape.
Plain and simple. They don't like to pay third parties, like FromSoftware, for exclusives. They're not going to have some huge exclusives setup for PS5 -- th...
The performance of the Scarlett is what's in question here, not the previous Xbox.
Besides, PS4 has a slower CPU and can already support VR -- it may be lower res on the One S, but there's no reason it wouldn't work.
@rob-GP
The Scarlett really is just a single item in the set of Windows machines that support MR. MS has already broken the console mold, in that regard.
Depends on how you look at it.
First of all, I'd say it's 2020 when they potentially "lose" it, and that's with the PS5. They're taking the PS2 route -- weaker specs, to make the price point low (although the PS2 was still priced pretty high, relatively), riding their PS4 success to let the PS5 gen be profitable. On top of that, it leaves them room to grow, with a PS5 Pro, whereas the XSX may be end-of-line, with its initial price point.
