Sounds like he doesn't understand the "business" part of "games business". That's kinda a problem, and not one MS would be likely to cave to, I think. I doubt MS bought them so they could make creative stuff only a few people enjoy, and lose a bunch of money in the process.
Chances are, they are interested in making games that sell, and that sell Xbox consoles. That's just my theory, though -- I could be wrong. Maybe they just want to be ...
Nope. Avellone must really think the world of himself, if he honestly believes he's more responsible for Obsidian's success than the rest of the leadership. Sounds like a feud, and sounds like he got the short end of the stick, to me.
Microsoft will force the leadership out if they don't succeed -- that's the price of being owned by the big corporation. Not really a concern of Avellone's, or anyone else's.
Wow. There's a lot of BS in the comments here, with regards to "emulation". For one thing, no PS4 game uses the x86 instruction set -- they all use x64, I guarantee. Remember that the PS4 has 8GB of GDDR5, not < 4 GB -- there's no way it uses a 32-bit instruction set like x86. On top of that, no a PC cannot "easily emulate a PS3". The Cell, when programmed properly, was competitive with a first-gen Intel i7 (a chip 3x it's size, in transistor count!), a...
The problem with PS3 games is the CPU, not the GPU.
There's no patent that will allow them to bring any serious PS3 games to the PS5 -- only the ones that didn't use the SPUs for much of anything.
PS5 touch controller? Dear lord... I hope not.
inXile is made up of former Interplay devs. Bard's Tale, Wasteland (kind of a spiritual predecessor to Fallout), Baldur's Gate, Torment... the list goes on.
They're not "new". That'd be like calling Respawn "new", because they used to make up a large chunk of Infinity Ward. Reformed is more like it.
Pillars was probably Obsidian's finest work.
Yakuza is good. The rest is kinda meh or just plain bad.
Anyone who thinks Yakuza is not stellar should seriously consider whether or not they can actually call themselves a "gamer".
Wow. Amazing month!
Modern gamers have no appreciation for great video games. They all want their match-3 fix along with their espresso, and then they are on to the next thing.
They might play some LoL or Fortnite later, for a half hour or so -- after watching other people play it, on YouTube or Twitch, for several hours on end.
I can't understand it. I don't even *want* to understand it. I didn't think gaming couch-potato nerdiness could go any further, and t...
@DarkVoyager
Minecraft is more popular today than it ever was -- MS shouts the huge numbers of monthly active users on platforms like Android and iOS pretty much every quarter, and that those numbers are largely Minecraft. The numbers always go up, not down. So... you're just plain wrong.
Your whining suggests you are upset at MS for another reason -- there is no reason to dislike this announcement. If you're mad at MS for something like making...
PlayStation just got better, and the PS fanboys are mad.
Wow. Just wow. There is no reason to disagree with this decision by Sony. None whatsoever, unless you fear that, somehow, exposure of users to PC, Nintendo, and Xbox will somehow take away from the PlayStation experience.
If that's really a thing, Sony wouldn't deserve the success it has. I think it does -- the PlayStation line is, and has always been, the top of the line console for a r...
I doubt they are skipping consoles. It'll just release on PC first. A synchronized release is pretty hard for a small team, even if they are owned by a big company.
On that point, The PS5 should definitely NOT play PS4 games -- people should keep a PS4, or pay for a service to play PS4 games on PS5, even if the architecture is basically the same but ++.
I am *really* looking forward to the PS5 announcement for that reason -- to cheer them on. No crossplay! No BC! PS forever! /s
The more we, the gamers, support those decisions, the more likely they will be to continue into the next gen and beyond. Keep that in mi...
Ironic, since Minecraft is probably the best, and most complete, VR game in existence.
I bet those PS+ vs GwG sites will still claim that PS+ wins, no matter what games are available.
Exactly this. Consoles, and the web as an interface for MS Office replacements, are a threat to Microsoft's bread and butter.
They are in the console space as a defensive posture -- they will not be caught with their pants down, like they were with mobile.
Anyone who thinks they will sell the Xbox division is nuts.. and doesn't grasp Microsoft's actual business, or it's threats, at all.
Sony is so cool, they don't even have to show you the greatness.

Heck it'll be some footage from games we've seen, and are gonna buy, anyway. All the new stuff they need to save for the 2020 E3 reveal of the PS5.
The hubris reminds me of 2005, though. Hello $800 PS5 -- hey you pay more for your phone every 3 years!
