I've been in a position on a website where I contacted companies for their sales information. They don't HAVE to give it up, but they generally do and don't usually lie TOO much.

Unless gaming is COMPLETELY different than the industries I covered, companies will handle those requests much the same way. I highly doubt there's a discrepancy in how PR is handled in gaming. As a matter of fact, though I don't CURRENTLY deal in the financials of gaming, I do wr...

"Sadly, sales numbers seems to be more important these days."

Exactly right. With "Google Trends" and "Twitter Trends" dominating AMERICA'S attention, being involved in those trends will dramatically impact sales. If one console can be universally accepted as the console to go with, Americans (who heavily fuel the gaming industry) will flock to that system. THey did it for the 360 despite receiving a poorer machine with generally poorer first...

This isn't true. VGChartz contacts the proper companies for their own released estimates for ALL consoles and games. It's still not COMPLETELY accurate but its about as accurate as you're gonna get.

On top of that, even IF 360 has a slight edge over PS3 right now, what were their "sales" numbers like 16 months ago, when it would have been on the market for as long as PS3 is now? Food for thought. I'm sure someone has the answer and it doesn't bod...

They all count shipped, really. Sometimes they use the word "sold" but that is misdirection. THis isn't isolated to the gaming industry, this is how ALL companies present their "sales" numbers so that investors are led a little astray. Modern capitalism. Make it sound better than it is so you look better on paper. Same story with the concept of inventory overhead.

Dear above posters,

MOST games in gaming have a shooting mechanic PERIOD. This is modern gaming. The fact that PS3 has more of a variety of games with shooting mechanics is beside the point. THey have a larger variety of GAMES and naturally, many of those games will include shooting mechanics. It's an interesting and largely unrelated dichotomy.

XBOX 360's shooter culture stems from their huge marketing push toward the BIG shooters from first/second/t...

I wonder if Polygon realizes that, over time, blatant bias won't help them cash in in the long run. I am thinking they do. The proverbial hedge fund/big bank approach to journalism...cash in while it's hot then regroup and find the next cash crop. Bet these guys aren't around in 5 years. And if they are, they are better businessmen than most. Better businessmen than journalists, clearly.

Haha I actually had more problems with the HUMAN enemies than the rather dumb "zombies" via the AI liked to flank and get creative with their cover. Then again, I played it on Hard/Survivor (though haven't finished my Survivor playthrough).

@Uncharted56 below: Got 3 of those games for FREE on PS+ already :p

Preorders are NOTORIOUSLY accurate for predicting sales, almost in direct correlation. EVERYBODY thinks so lol

But...there are far more PS3's and far more CONNECTED PS3's in peoples' homes worldwide. Software sales are tricky. WHat sold 300k-500k units in Japan may never have reached the global charts but still counts for sales and I'd venture to predict that PS3 software GLOBALLY outsold 360s since there is a FAR larger library of games on the machine, sold in different markets but popular there nonetheless in their own right.

From a business standpoint...in America? ...

See this is the argument I CONSTANTLY get into with people. Everyone verbally maligns FF13 but it's a GREAT game and 13-2 is a pretty good followup. It's not that it's Americanized or a BAD game...it's evolved and the combat is truly deep an engaging, as is the storyline. Even FF12 caught alot of flak but it;;s a SUPERB video game. I understand the gripes associated with those games but I don't understand the utter hatred and misinformed "bad game" comments. You ...

I did not know that it was just "Square" before Squaresoft. Learn something new everyday. And here I call myself a Square fan :p

While we're arguing semantics, Squaresoft BOUGHT Enix, calling it a merger (and for the most part, it was) though it was technically an amicable takeover :p

I just wish they had more than just the basic content. Some great games shown off and it looks like EA is gonna make a comeback in general but they need more "oomph" and to stop relying on Battlefield games and EA Sports to succeed. THe days where EA Sports make them great are in the past. The future is in games like PvZ Garden Warfare and Titanfall. Hopefully we see more of those heavy hitters in the future.

Gotta disagree here. They had a fantastic press conference but then they bailed and granted few (if any) interviews leading to ZERO explanations about their machine. E3 is about showing off and all they did was look pretty on Day 0, before the actual expo even started.

On day 3 some soundbytes and statements were FINALLY made but both Sony and Nintendo were available all week to field questions. Hell, Ubisoft, Square Enix, and EA did a better job with the public than MS did. ...

E3 isn't just about the big press conferences, to me. It's a 3 day event and all we knew from Microsoft was what was said on Day 0, before the actual expo even opened. The standard is that you hold a big press conference, then make yourself available on the show floor to speak with the press and other industry-related employees as well as the public, by proxy. MS did none of this.

I'll agree and even said so in the article...if MS' presence was to be judged on...

Haha idunno about THAT. If you're going on a per-title basis and include mini games, facebook games, and tablet games, then probably. But for full-priced titles, Console destroys PC in sales. Quite easily, in fact.

It's $50 a year, the story's already out, and nobody cares because it comes WITH PS+ which means an amazing lineup of free games and incredible discounts. So good, in fact, that Microsoft s FINALLY copying it for Xbox Gold :p

That's formerly SquareSOFT :p

Nice quick reference though. There was a time when I was desperately seeking an FF-like title but through much research, I've found and played nearly all of them that I wanted to.

Exactly. Unfortunately their new reliance on Nintendo Direct hurt their E3 status this year but did leave onlookers with a sense of future gold. It remains to be seen how their "slow trickle" approach plays out with regards to sales, but they did a decent job despite withholding much of their material for future months.
