"Don't be an ass, or your friend might get distracted, fail to pay attention to the toaster, and nearly burn his house down."
It's universal advice like this that really helps out the gaming community.
Great story, btw.
This is absolutely true. Not all movies are fun. Not all books are fun. Not all art is pretty (I'd say that's the equivalent). Not all games have to be fun.
The game part of "video game" is increasingly becoming a misnomer. It's less important that they are "games" and more important that they are interactive in some way. That's how I see it.
Well, aren't ALL video games?!
(Before I get more "disagree" votes...this is sarcasm)
Are we at the point yet where WW2 is a retro-enough setting that it can be cool again?
And now video games are explicitly telling our children *not* to read. WAY TO GO, VIDEO GAMES.
I don't think I've actually played a multiplayer game that had a "narrative" but I like the idea in theory. Of course, it doesn't add a whole lot, but I think it can still add an extra layer to what is otherwise just "NOW IT'S DEATHMATCH TIME KILL THOSE PEOPLE."
I feel like, to the casual observer, fighting games haven't changed all that much over the years...I'm interested to see where they go. Will they just end up becoming more and more focused until it is just a small niche genre or will they somehow find the balance between getting the crazy competitive players and the more casual fans?
I don't really care about ponies either way, but I would literally (I mean *literally literally*) kill someone for a Transformers Skylanders-esque game.
Very well done. Thoughtful writeups like this are always good. Helps clear out some of the inane crap a lot of people write.
Nice article! I think it helps to be a little crazy if you want to get far at all in Fez.
He's such a goof ball. Seems like a fun guy to hang out with.
All pretty good picks. Another suggestion: Any Burnout game. The driving is pretty straightforward and everyone loves a good car crash.
Wow, I didn't even know this was coming out. Blame it on Nintendo desperate attempt to throw whatever they can at the 3DS as fast as possible, I guess.
Either way, I'm glad this looks neat. The Mario sports games have always been fun.
My thoughts on the always-online DRM thing are that I don't really think it's a big deal...I mean, who doesn't have internet but is really pumped about playing Diablo 3? I'm sure there are some, but not many.
BUT then this happens, and the game is totally busted apparently because of this always-onlien DRM stuff. So I'm changing sides. You're PC folks, this does seem pretty stupid.
Campers are frustrating, but there's nothing "wrong" with it...if you're playing a deathmatch mode.
In a CTF or MW3's Kill Confirmed or something, campers are very irritating and they're specifically playing against the rules of the mode in order to boost their own score. Those guys suck.
What I want from TES Online (and won't get):
A regular first person Elder Scrolls game that can be played offline or with other people running around the world with you.
Just co-op Skyrim. That's what I want. TES Online...does not look like that.
Sure, most games are "dumb" but I think it's an over-generalization to lump BioShock in with "most games." Just because the majority of your time in it is spent shooting people doesn't mean there aren't deeper messages and things going on.
I love Minecraft. Like, LOVE LOVE LOVE it.
And I have zero interest in this version. It not having "the same spirit" is probably the reason why. I'm not going to say that the fun of Minecraft is figuring things out on your own (because I sure as Hell have used the wiki), but the wiki isn't forced upon you...I'll still learn new things you can do just from talking to people, and that's always cool.
I believe the article actually covers all of the things you mention.
It drives me crazy when I see things that are very clear ripoffs of pre-existing things. I think I'm allergic to creative bankruptcy.
