My cynical gut reaction is to say that of course they'll "fix" it. That's how games are these days...but from what I've been hearing these Firaxis guys seem to really love the original game. So who knows, I guess.
There are still games that do a good job of showing and not telling...Bioshock comes to mind, at least parts of it.
But yeah, it's a lost art. Developers have decided that since they are now able to be verbose, they should be verbose.
It's tough to hate on sequels when you get games like Portal 2, but it would be nice seeing more orginal games...unless they end up being kinda disappointing like LA Noire (which I liked, though I know some people didn't).
"a cushioned sleeve that makes the Wii Remote feel like a He-Man figure’s head."
This is one of the most weirdly disgusting/accurate descriptions of a Wii Remote jacket I've ever seen. Nicely done.
I only knew a couple of these...I should've just hit the showers when I thought the first one was Galaga.
I'M SO STUPID.
And then Taylor Swift can make her own heartfelt video game that everyone will love because she overcame the hardship of being interrupted.
It will be about unicorns that were unpopular in high school.
What's that Kanye West song that's in every video game trailer? Why don't we just cut out the middlemen and make that song a video game?
That's boring! Anyone can kill somebody with the cerebral bore.
It's about running into a firefight where everyone is waving machine guns around like idiots and then taking out 5 guys in as many bullets. Hitting a guy in the face with a thing that...chews through his head (what did that gun do exactly?) is cool and all, but killing a guy because your trigger finger is more reliable than his? Badass.
The only way I can really be a bad guy in a video game is if I plan out some kind of arc or backstory beforehand. For example, before I played Mass Effect (near the time ME2 came out, so I knew my actions would be important later) I decided that my Shep would be suffering through a gradual Darth Vader-esque fall from grace.
Or in Skyrim, my dark elf Harold Bloodshadow is lashing out at all of Tamriel's anti-dunmer racists. He just hates them so!
I hear ya. My girlfriend bought me Zelda for Christmas and I still haven't even popped it in...It's just, you know, SKYRIM still exists.
I always want to keep my games, but it doesn't usually work out like that...I'm sure most of my SNES or 64 games were thrown away or stolen by one of my jerk siblings.
Even when Gamestop was still Funcoland I knew selling my stuff there was a waste of time.
I believe the game you're looking for is Serious Sam, then.
As long as yer Calls of Duty or whatever have a semi-automatic assault rifle I don't care how many other guns it has. The FAL in MW2 and the MKwhatever in MW3 are where it's at.
This pieces nails it: People go to sites they hate so they can complain about them, they read articles about games they don't like so they can complain about how everything is a military shooter or whatever, and then when something comes out that isn't that, nobody buys it.
I'm guilty of some of that myself, we all are I'm sure, but I still bought Alan Wake, so that makes me a winner.
I think you're totally on the trolley here. Just look at how many people played Uncharted 3 so they could see how they story went despite the apparently-messed up shooting.
And I'm glad you brought up MW3. I hated the story in those games (mostly 'cause of 2's awful campaign), I didn't didn't care at all when...something happened to one of the characters...and yet, I still was kinda interested in seeing how it all played out just for the sake of see...
A very interesting piece...Especially since games and comics have both been kind of historically looked down upon.
I think we just need our Watchmen. The game that's so incredible that even the people who don't like video games have to begrudgingly say "Ugh, fine, whatever."
I've bought all of the Humble Bundles except one, and they've all had Mac versions (except for maybe one game).
I paid $15 for the last one and gave it all to charity so I could feel good about myself...Really, is there any other reason to give to charity?
This piece had me as soon as I read that anecdote at the beginning. Great stuff.
Wow, I was way overthinking this. Some of 'em were pretty clever though.
Was Turok 2 the one with Tobias Bruckner? If so, it DESERVES to be popular.
