Unfortunately, most of those "new concepts" have turned out to be unappealing gimmicks that degrade the gaming experience, rather than enhancing it. Wii, Wii U, and 3DS all had "new concepts", but they all ended up being mediocre.
Uhoh, we all know what "brand new concept" means. More gimmicks to ruin the gaming experience. How far the mighty Nintendo has fallen.
You sound bitter about the failure of the Wii U. Understandable, I would be too if I invested money in a product that failed.
No one "went out of their way" to kill the Wii U, it died due to a very poor, gimmicky, feature-lacking, low-spec design. You can't put out a poor product and actually expect it to sell, but that's exactly what Nintendo did.
Judging by Nintendo's products for over a decade, they really are incapable of producing anything competitive. They're even too cheap to put an internal HDD or Ethernet port in their consoles, what a complete joke the company has become when it comes to their hardware.
Oh no, not another arrogant "PC gamer". You don't seem to understand that, if all possible platforms, PC is one of the most fragmented of all.
- There is a constant need to upgrade CPU, GPU, and RAM to play the latest games
- Many games don't include full controller support.
- Almost no games are available physically, and even if they are, they always require a Steam or other online connection.
- There is a constant need to updat...
Don't be too concerned, it's not going to happen anyway. Nintendo's reputation has been heavily damaged by the Wii and Wii U, the possibility of recovering from those failures is almost nonexistent.
A normal controller alone, although important, won't be enough to make it successful. The console itself needs to be solidly designed, full-featured, competitively specced, and must include features commonly expected by gamers. The Wii U was none of that, which is a big reason for its failure.
So, does that mean you're going to buy it, or you still haven't made your mind up despite 60 reviews already out? You certainly don't sound too enthusiastic about it, but may just be your style.
Well, please do come back to the comment sections here, and offer your own impressions of the game, after you shell out $60 (lol) for it. We'd all love to hear how great a game it is.
Well according to Polygon, the game is broken; they were so disgusted with it, they just stopped playing and skipped the review. It just sounds like the reviewer hated the gimmicky controls, and decided that it wasn't even worth going through the trauma of reviewing it.
I guess a 71 is a "decent place to sit" if you're satisfied with mediocre games, so I agree with you there.
EDIT: Did you look at the other Metacritic scores for previous Starfox games? Almost all of them are higher than Zero. And Zero's score is boosted by a few diehard Nintendo fansites, like uoroxx or cheatcc; take those skewed reviews out, and it would be well into the 60s. That makes Starfox Zero oneof the worst games in the series.
Not surprising at all. At this point, only the most diehard Nintendo fans are defending this game. And it's sitting on Metacritic with an overall score of 71, "mixed or average reviews", so it clearly missed the mark.
Except, most reviews do mention that the motion controls basically ruin the experience, and the game is sitting on Metacritic with an overall score of 71 ("mixed or averge reviews"). Doesn't sound like it "turned out pretty well" at all, really.
EDIT: The author admits that the motion controls are a gimmick, that the graphics if some levels and enemies are mediocre, and that the "stealth" segments aren't that great, but still says it i...
At this point, it looks like the NX will be an Android based console, which is why Emily Rodgers claims that it will have access to a much larger library of games. If this is Nintendo's solution to lack of games, I'm afraid it will be their last failed piece of gaming hardware, and their future will be as a game/toy developer only. Time will tell.
Finished the 12 parts, very thorough and detailed article! I did see that you specifically covered the substandard hardware and gimmicks, which I think have done a lot of damage to Nintendo's reputation. One thing to look back upon, in terms of your long article, is that there probably was no way to salvage the Wii U, even though you offered some ways to improve it. In the end, the Wii U hardware itself couldn't be changed or improved, it was poorly-designed and lacking in even the mo...
"And no the Pro Controller is exactly a Gamepad without the screen. Same layout."
The "Pro" controller is nothing more than a ripoff of the 360 controller's shape (shape is almost identical), and bears no resemblance to the gamepad, other than the placement of buttons. And sadly, Nintendo's placement of the analog sticks on the top area of the Pro Controller was another bungled design decision, as most people prefer the sticks to be on the bottom...
Very well-written article you wrote. I have only read the first 4 parts (out of 12!), but you cover a lot of areas that Nintendo needed to improve on (and which they really haven't fixed to this day). I guess somewhere in your article, you cover Nintendo's poorly-designed hardware, and their obsession with gimmicks to set themselves apart? Because in my opinion, this has been their greatest failure; not delivering solid, well-designed, feature-rich hardware to the gaming community. T...
Funny how this patent looks very close to the Microsoft Wireless Speed Wheel for the 360:

First Nintendo rips off the 360 controller design for the "Pro" Wii U controller, now this. What a joke.
Why would anyone make a portable VR handheld/console? Can you imagine playing a VR game while on a bus, train, or walking down the street? Makes no sense.
