Wii U not only didn't "win" 2014, it will probably be the last home console from Nintendo. They clearly just don't have the expertise to design good console (or even handheld) hardware anymore, and they try to cover that up with silly gimmicks like the awful "glasses free 3D" and the gimmicky gamepad (which is the entire reason that the base Wii U console is so feature-lacking and weak, it was an expensive gimmick that sapped the resources of the main console due ...
They only "won" in the fantasy world of Nintendo fanboys, in real life the Wii U is a dismal third place in the current gen consoles, and its library of games is anemic and boring. If you don't buy into Nintendo's gimmicks and eternally rehashed games, there is absolutely no reason to buy a Wii U, even with the paltry handful of cartoony games on it.
This article really should have been titled "2015: The Last Year of the Wii U". With a beyond anemic selection of current and upcoming games, no 3rd parties, and entire game genres simply missing, the Wii U just won't be appealing to many more gamers in the future. Most of the Nintendo diehards already own one, casuals moved on to mobile games years ago, and core gamers have two far better-designed consoles to choose from, with far better selections of games.

No, it really isn't "worth every cent", unless you're a diehard Nintendo fanboy that simply must have every Mario, Zelda, etc. game out there. The Wii U has a very anemic game library with entire genres of games simply missing, and for the money you pay for the hardware, you're really just getting a last-gen console with a silly gimmick attached, point blank period.
They really do, however they should have actually consulted those 3rd party devs before putting out a gimmicky, inferior product that just doesn't have the stuffing to handle this generation's games. It's their own fault, for "doing their own thing" once again.
Kinect was the single main reason why I skipped the XB1. Can't stand gimmicks that don't enhance gameplay, but rather detract from it. If MS had simply focused on a solidly-designed gaming console, and left out this gimmick, they'd be in a lot better position this generation. Putting so much emphasis on the Kinect really hurt the overall console itself, by sapping resources from the base console specs. That gave Sony an opportunity to release a genuinely better base console th...
"they aren't really competing. They are doing their own things."
Which is why they're failing this generation, "doing their own things" isn't giving gamers what they want. They got away with that (for a while) last generation, but the original Wii died years ago, after the casual gamers lost interest, while the 360 and PS3 are still getting great support.
Nintendo should have realized that they couldn't get away with the s...
There really are no games that will "make" me buy a Wii U. If Nintendo had designed a much better, higher-spec console, and skipped the silly gimmickpad, and cultivated 3rd party devs, I might have considered it. Sadly, they once again bet that a gimmick would make up for inferior hardware (just as they did with the awful Wii before this), and they failed. Only hardcore Nintendo fans will accept this kind of product, but there just aren't enough of those gamers left to save t...
Nintendo is done with the home console market, the Wii U was their last one. They clearly can no longer compete in that market, just don't have the technical expertise. And they bungled the Wii U design badly, gimping so many specs and leaving out commonly expected features that have been in consoles for many years.
I could see them releasing a new handheld that also connects to the TV. But knowing Nintendo, they'll ruin that with yet another silly gimmick, still h...
U must be mad because he said the Wii U was only for hardcore Nintendo fans, lol. Unfortunately, it's true.
Sales in Japan for any gaming products are tiny in relation to the rest of the world, so it really isn't anything to brag about. It's a shame that Nintendo has this cheap trick of releasing crappy hardware, then making revisions to add missing features and better specs, which should have been in that hardware to begin with. Original 3DS had a stupidly small screen, then they released the XL to get suckers to re-buy. Both of those models amazingly lacked a 2nd analog controller, so ...
Well said! Nintendo's arrogance has really dragged them down. Without consulting any developers or gaming hardware experts, they designed and released a very mediocre console with an awkward, expensive, distracting gimmick included. If you don't buy into the gimmickpad (and most people clearly don't), then you're left with a low-spec, feature-lacking base console with just a handful of decent games available. Just not worth it at all.
Not even going to click on the lame flamebait article by Garethvk, he clearly has no idea what he's talking about. He apparently can't even understand the difference between a hack and a DDOS attack, and he shouldn't be writing articles about stuff he doesn't understand.
The master of gimmicks by far is Nintendo . . . they know they haven't been able to compete in terms of solid hardware for over a decade, so they resort to silly gimmicks to try to set themselves apart, making their gaming systems much worse than the competition. This was true for the 3DS (2nd screen and 3D are both gimmicks, most people just turn the 3D off and the second screen is mostly just used for a map or inventory, which can be done with a simple button press on a conventional sy...
Bayonetta 2 was a commercial failure (only 450k copies sold worldwide since launch, and this was a hugely hyped game), there is no way that a sequel is coming anytime soon. For the amount of time, effort, and money that Platinum put into the game, they certainly didn't do very well with it. More proof that the Wii U is mainly a console for Nintendo's own first party IPs, no point in putting 3rd party games on it at all, diehard Nintendo fans just don't buy them.
This article really would make more sense if the title were: "Nintendo President Agrees There Are Too Many Gimmicks In Nintendo Products Nowadays", because that's the real problem with the Nintendo of today. Why Iwata is still in charge after the failed Wii U is beyond belief.
Wii U was the worst console of 2014? Agreed.
Nintendo has been on a "downward spiral" (or going downhill, the article title is poorly written), for many years. Their poorly-designed, gimmicky, feature-lacking products, combined with boring rehashed games, have left them in this position. Until they completely change their philosophy, of designing the cheapest possible hardware combined with some silly gimmick to attract attention, and rehashing the same games over and over, they'll continue to fade away.
What's up with all these ridiculous pro-Nintendo fanboy fantasy articles? Is N4G now on Nintendo's payroll? The Wii U is a failed console, Nintendo bet the bank (again) that a cheap gimmick tied to crap hardware would reel the suckers in again, just like it did with the Wii; only this time, the scheme failed miserably. Unless Nintendo has a new console coming out in the next year or so, they're history; destined to move on to other silly gimmicks like their QOL garbage.
They already have one of the world's worst "tablets": the Wii U gamepad. Low-rez 960x544 screen, cheap battery that only lasts a few hours, no cpu/gpu/RAM so it's really just a dumb terminal that can't travel, no analog triggers, and poor wifi hardware. They clearly set out to make the cheapest possible controller for the Wii U, to keep their profits up (same philosophy for the base console as well).
It really seems like Nintendo has no good internal e...
