Carmack did stress that he felt the 360 had the better hardware, but that space limitations were a problem for the game. He says that Sony poor design choices with their architecture:

Pretty cool interface design. The fanboys are reporting this story because they're offended by the remark about the PS3 selling the least, but if they were to actually read the article they might be surprised at the insights it reveals.
