And somehow millions are able to get past that utter confusion and play COD and Fortnite on Xbox.

You will always have Ill-informed consumers to some degree, but to say that offering a streaming device alongside a traditional local device is too confusing ignores all of the trends we see in other media. No company in 2018 (or 2020 for that matter) should be scared of confusing consumers by releasing two variations of a piece of tech like you suggest. Two skus worked out OK ...

I agree with many of the technical concerns in the article, but consumer confusion isn't one of them. Parents today have Google at their fingertips, and they're certainly used to various pieces of tech being on the market, whether it be in music, movie, or television delivery.

Will some grandmas buy a Wii Station 720 from Walgreens? Yes. But by and large, the confused casuals argument is outdated.

Hopefully the 10s of billions MS invested in the c...

I'm sure it is complicated, but that's what we pay these tech companies to do.

Or maybe the streaming app is available on the current systems, and allows MS to release "next gen," cpu intensive games for years to come on the old systems.

Wait for that price drop without missing the big titles. Very interesting.

It will depend on what games you have access to outside of Gamepass, but I would consider getting one for travel at that price.

Right now the Switch is my hotel companion, but if this device is small, cheap and portable, I'd get it.

It is all inevitable, and I am happy to see the progress we're seeing.

Because he's just being polite and professional?

He's saying that he doesn't support the remastering of these particular games, but that's not meant to be a knock against the other older games Sony, MS, and Nintendo have supported being on their platforms.

Morrowind is only available on X1 because of the emulator and MS's in house folks, not Bethesda's.

I don't have a problem with this one. The core game was inexpensive (I own 3 versions of the game and haven't paid $30 total), it's been well supported, and they're monetizing a progression system through a "battle pass" system that gives you more cosmetics.

Your last point seems most likely. We keep hearing about how PS+, GWG, etc. "free" games actually lead to more sales after their free release.

The advertising push that came from RL being added to GP likely led to many just clicking to buy it, too.

You could just read the article.

I've been renting video games since the 80s. Same thing with GP except it is a much better option.

Nothing stopping you from ignoring GP and just buying your physical games.

I take pride in my physical game collection. Doesn't mean I don't recognize a good deal in the digital renting space.

@showtime

I can rent a digital movie from Google/Prime/iTunes/etc., I can rent the physical copy from Netflix/Redbo...

No. You can just charge the exact amount on all other platforms. Not sure why you think this is standard.

No, they mean cross-party. It's their own 3rd party ID to allow crossplaying users to join parties together. It's explained in the article.

You missed the point about "the BS that came after the initial posts."

Her firing had nothing to do with feminism or social inequality. Agreed. That's what made the things that followed so ironically bad for the causes she and others try to push for.

Retweeting her exchange and framing it as "today in being a female game dev" and then making it seem like she was being attacked by toxic gamers was not only a big stretch of the actua...

Price and her white knights in the media and "fans" need to stop making this about feminism or whatever other virtue signaling they're trying to push on this.

Her response(s) to the situation were ignorant, and she's done more to hinder proponents of equality and anti-toxicity in the games industry through this BS that has come after the initial twitter posts.

That's assuming the 3rd party can self publish. For a lot of devs, you're losing 30%+ to the pub, 10%+ to the platform holder, 20%+ to retail/distributors.

1st party is also able to subsidize costs of making games by the collection of those royalties from 3rd parties, accessories, and services.

Don't forget that many of those AA studios closed/went bankrupt for a reason.

As indie studios grow, hopefully more continue to fill the gap. Heavier investment from 1st party into their indie programs, crowdsourcing, and early access are also helping.

PC is still home to a lot of "AA" games, but those devs aren't having to fight through retail to get to an audience.

But also consider that GOW got called the "game of the generation" for a reason. Reaprr is right, 1st party has the ability to take those risks where a lot of 3rd party doesnt. We use GOW as an example, but we can't overlook the 5+ years it took to deliver that experience. We also have to realize that games like GOW are the vast minority of the THOUSANDS of games releasing each year.

I wish there were 100 GOW level games out there, but that's not realisti...

Then follow the author's advice and just try messaging a friend and start playing together. IRL connections are the easiest to way to get started on building a friend's list.

I feel like introverts like you think online gaming is all about playing with randoms. It's not. Just like it's been since the very beginning, gaming in 2018 can still be all about playing with friends.
