Actually I sounded a word of caution to someone who was hailing MAG as the next great thing before Christmas.

I pointed out that while the hype train called it AAA I thought it would get a score of 7-8.

At that point I was told the definition of AAA is not review score, but dev time, marketing budget and hype put into it. So, by that standard MAG is AAA - it just won't get good reviews.

Fine by me though - I think it's a ground breaking game which, while...

Well your comment is poorly worded - no game is fun be it 5v5 upto 128v128 if you're all simply stood in a desert arena shooting at whoever you see.

I can also tell from your comment that you didn't play the beta (much) since games played out differently and often the end game was in fact a full assault - all the squads on both teams came together at the end of the stage to attack/defend a single objective.

Really, MAG has it's fair share of problems and the review s...

@ Rush Sykes

Poor troll attempt - at least check the games you're trying to use.

None of those FPSs are 256. Tabula Rasa is an MMO (a crap one too) with instances and Huxley hasn't been played by anyone outside the devs - and I'm not even sure the devs have played it...

I'll give you another try if you like, but you'll need to get your wikipedia hands dirty and find some 256 player FPSs.

How come, in those shots there's only at most about 4 characters on display?

And several of them are showing the main characters from an outside view so I guess those are cutscenes - in fact a minority seem to be from FPS perspective....

Finally, I see the irony of Naughty Dog's Next Gen filter from UC2 has been lost on Bungie ;) Anymore bloom and I'd put it in a flower show lol.

and just get it from Amazon or your other fave internet retailer in one of the countries it's being sold.

No problem.

PC Game is cheaper and gets free DLC in exchange for being ~ 4 months late.

Idk - think this is a game better suited to consoles, but at least Ubisoft is lightening up and realising that their draconian security and nickel/diming customers isn't working on PC.

Well I haven't looked at the full review but :

"256 players in the same battlefield is clearly a new step beyond what console online gaming was offering. "

Why just console? Where are all these PC FPSs that support 256 players? I've heard of PlanetSide and.... nothing else? Well that's not quite true, I know of another > 256 player FPS too but no one else has mentioend it so I won't. Oh and it was a poor FPS.

"The lack of any non-online...

Lol @ FF11

Not sure which is funnier - that you think an MMO is comparable to an FPS, or that you *think* FF11 allows >256 people in a single combat instance.

Still I give trolls something - they're persistent in their ignorance.

There's a PC Beta so there's a beta on a ... what is is 360 games are called when they're not exclusive? "Microsoft Platform" - ah yeah that's it. There's a beta on a "Microsoft Platform".

So all you 360 guys have a beta too - be happy!

What? Rechargeable health - lol. Wow that was a big one.

As you correctly pointed out, Goldeneye perfected and proved the concept of FPS on console. Rechargeable health had been in many PC titles - usually called "easy mode" so children could manage the game.

Like I said, Halo was a good xbox game but it should not be in a list of 10 most important FPSs (which is what this list actually is rather than what it's called) when the likes of Deus Ex and CS aren'...

Sadly, some gamers just aren't up to the mark these days - casuals rule.

Reviewing a beta is pretty kewl though. What will they post tomorrow - a review of Halo Retch?

Takes 2 to tango, man.

Gamestop didn't decide on this alone, EA and by extension DICE came up with this too.

Maybe it's not so awesome after all if this kind of gimmick is necessary.

Still I guess this is just for consoles - PC version is probably fine (or will get hacked immediately).

Gabe Newell - his perfect face and body has sold a 360 to a gajillion screaming teens all hoping to impress him with their l33t 5killzzz

What more could any marketeer want?

But Half-life proved a popular mod-engine and HL2 has improved over that again.

While HL1+2 are excellent shooters in their own right, the fact that they leant themselves to modding which in turn created icons like CounterStrike & Day of Defeat really means they stand at the top of this chart in terms of FPS influence.

It's a big enough gap to MW2 so people will be bored and looking for the next big thing.

The risk to BF is in fact probably what DICE call it's strength - they have lots of vehicles. While vehicles can be fun, in every BF game I've played to date, there are the same list of problems

1) people queue for vehicles, and TK those who beat them to it
2) The vehicles are too easy to operate compared to the infantry play, so as infantry you can be at a big disadvantage...

Seems strange that Popular Mechanics is able to do a better job than the "professional" gaming press - then again, no surprise given the way gaming journalism has gone these last few years.

Anyway, the article sums up something I couldn't really put my finger on before.

If you're playing 5v5 or 8v8 for example, if you're playing against players who are worse than you, you feel personally, individually, invincible. If you happen to be in one of those MW2/TF2...

I think Unreal can be dropped - for me that game was basically Quake with a different skin. Also Halo should go - Halo was a good xbox FPS, but in the great scheme of things wasn't really ground breaking - you might look at Bungie's efforts pre-Halo where they did try some innovative things. I sort of think that Halo is here because a large group of people will get upset about being left out if it isn't.

Instead of those 2 I'd put Deus Ex 1 because it successfully merged RPG and ...

How poor Rare has become since purchased by MS.

As for the rest of the list, predictable and probably OK. However this list is taking into account the time of release - clearly PD or Goldeneye, Halo etc don't compare well to todays shooters.

So really this isn't a best FPS list, but a list of FPS which in their time were considered important.
