Sony's appeal was limited to a key demographic, and leading into the current gen the assumption by the mainstream that gaming was for nerds and children was making a come back. That is what I meant by my statement
Nintendo re introduced gaming to the mainstream, just as Sony had done before. And Nintendo did before that.

And when Sony's solution started to wane and the industry become less open and mainstream, Nintendo re opened the market and industry with the wii. This also prevented a second industry crash that was being caused by this stagnation and rising development costs by giving devs and publishers an easy outlet for profits.
Every handheld dual has seen Nintendo release the "weaker" hardware.
So while he may be alluding to the 3ds~vita, his statement is really a catch all for handheld gaming history.
As far as I know, xbl ads are dash board only. Actual gameplay is left alone.
