The 2nd does come with the first game, and the combat system for it is changed a bit, so whether its an improvement or not is for you to decide.

Up the player count to at least 32 (for consoles) and then I'll believe them. Game does look amazing overall so far.
Many developers try to emulate the success of others and end up doing OK, or failing miserably (Qauntum Theory anyone?). Some of the more creative games / games that get praised for being well done get passed over by rehashes of the same thing every year / sequels. As a result, many developers or publishers are less willing to take the risks involved with putting out a new IP / something different for fear of it not selling.

If the 360 can't handle a higher player count, I don't think they'd up the PS3 version if it could. They'll probably try and keep them similar so they don't have gamers complaining about it / starting flame wars.

You could build you own town, visit your friends town and go of on group missions together to level up your created character and farm for gear and armor. MAG can do 256 players without destruction, Bad Company 2 has 24 with destruction. You'd think with the upgrades to the Frostbite engine as well as the time and effort put into the game, it'd be able to support more than 24 players. The PC version will be better, but you'd think they'd at least try with the console versions.
